Fieldworker for Mmani Language Documentation Project (Guinea-Conakry)

 

The Mmani Language Documentation Project is looking for an advanced graduate
student to participate in the documentation of a moribund language spoken on the
southwestern coast of Guinea-Conakry. The successful candidate will have strong
training in structural linguistics, especially syntax, and will also have
interests and possibly experience in fieldwork, ethnography, and language
description. The nature and extent of the person’s contribution will be
negotiated on the basis of qualifications and experiences. In a best-case
scenario the person would be an advanced Ph.D. student who could use the data
and experience for a thesis. Alternatively the “student” could also be a recent
Ph.D., who is looking for some field experience and would contribute
significantly to the analysis and production of language materials. Ideally this
student would want to carry on the work in some way after the project’s
completion. Speaking ability in French is required, and a decided plus is
knowledge of any of the relevant languages (Mmani, Soso) or their relatives
(Atlantic and Mande groups of Niger-Congo). The successful candidate will be
awarded a small stipend for participation in the project (roughly US$800/month
for thirteen months 1 Nov  2004 to 30 Nov 2005). Travel expenses to and from the
research site and living expenses at the site will also be covered. The project
is funded by a grant from the Hans Rausing Charitable Trust (SOAS) and is
conducted jointly with the Center for Research into Guinean Languages (CELG) at

Chercheur pour le Projet de recherche sur la langue mmani (Guinée Conakry)

 

Le Projet de recherche sur la langue mmani cherche un étudiant doctoral qui
voudrait prendre part à la documentation d’une langue moribonde parlée sur la
côte sud-ouest de la Guinée Conakry.  Le candidat devrait posséder une formation
en linguistique structurelle, plus précisément en syntaxe, et un intérêt et de
l’expérience sur le terrain si possible. Les responsabilités exactes dépendent
des compétences et de l’expérience du candidat.  De préférence, l’étudiant
serait un étudiant doctoral avancé, qui pourrait ainsi utiliser les informations
collectées et son expérience pour sa thèse. Autrement, l’étudiant pourrait être
un nouveau titulaire au doctorat, qui recherche de l’expérience sur le terrain
et contribuerait à l’analyse et la réalisation de matériaux linguistiques.
L’idéal serait que le chercheur continue la recherche après l’achèvement du
projet. Le candidat doit parler français, et il est préférable qu’il connaisse
les langues de la recherche (Mmani, Soso) ou les langues reliées au groupe
atlantique et mandé du Niger-Congo. La personne embauchée recevra une petite
bourse (environ US$800 par mois durant treize mois, du 1er novembre 2004 au 30
novembre 2005. Les frais de transport sur place et les frais d’hébergement et de
nourriture seront payés. Le projet est financé par « Hans Rausing Charitable
Trust (SOAS, Université de Londres) » et est dirigé par le Centre d’Étude des
