Dear Typologists,
I wanted to let you know about two things of interest.
* First, there will be a special organized session at the Linguistic
Society of America Annual Meeting in San Francisco, as follows:
Typology in American Linguistics: An Appraisal of the Field
Sunday, January 9, 2005, 1-6 p.m.
Co-Sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley
Organizers:
Larry Hyman, Linguistics Department, UCB
Johanna Nichols, Slavic Department, UCB
Lynn Nichols, Linguistics Department, UCB
Other Participants:
Mark Baker (Rutgers), Balthasar Bickel (U Leipzig), Joan Bresnan (Stanford),
Brian Joseph (OSU), Joan Maling (Brandeis & NSF), James McCloskey (UC
Santa Cruz), Frans Plank (U Konstanz), Maria Polinsky (UC San Diego),
Robert VanValin (SUNY Buffalo)
The full statement and rationale for the session can be downloaded at:
http://linguistics.berkeley.edu/events/LSA_Typology_Workshop_Jan_9.pdf
We hope that it will be well-attended and welcome any reactions or other input.
* Second, we at Berkeley have just established a Cross-Linguistic
Tonal Database (XTone), which is now "open for business":
http://xtone.linguistics.berkeley.edu/
Feel free to let people know/enter languages etc. (give us feedback, etc.)
