'Hear' as 'understand'

Hi,

There's an article by Michael Fortescue, "Thoughts about thought"
(Cognitive Linguistics 12:1 [2001], 15-45), that has a section on
'understand', covering verbs originally based not only on 'hear' but
also other physical actions, which might be of interest here.
