*PhD candidate position at the University of Zurich*

One doctoral student position in the research project ”The Greater Burma
Zone - a transitional zone of languages and peoples” is to be filled at the
Department of General Linguistics, University of Zurich, beginning on March
1st, 2014 (date negotiable), limited to three years.

*Requirements:*
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in linguistics with excellent
grades at latest by the time he/she takes up his/her position in the
project, with a focus on or interest in linguistic typology, areal
linguistics and language contact. Knowledge of Burmese and/or other
languages of South-/Southeast Asia is an asset, but not a requirement.

*Description:*

The successful applicant will work with the project leader and a post-doc
researcher on language contact and convergence phenomena in Myanmar and
adjacent regions. The aim of the project, which brings together methods
from linguistics and history, is to describe and explain the (development
of the) linguistic landscape of present day Myanmar situated between the
South and Southeast Asian linguistic areas. Apart from working with
published material at the Department of General Linguistics at the
University of Zurich, field trips to Myanmar to collect specific data are
part of the position. The successful applicant is expected to complete his
PhD dissertation at the University of Zurich on language contact and
convergence phenomena in Myanmar, the exact topic of which is to be
determined in accordance with his/her background and preferences.

Salary is according to Swiss public employee pay scale (Canton of Zurich).
