Dear colleagues,

(apologies for cross-postings)

The Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki invites applications for

TWO (2) POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (LINGUISTICS)

for a fixed term period of three years from 1 September 2019 onwards (or as agreed).

We are looking for candidates with expertise in sociolinguistics or historical and contact linguistics, or some combination of these. The two successful candidates will become members of a 5-year research project “Linguistic Adaptation: Typological and Sociolinguistic Perspectives to Language Variation”, 2019–2023. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The PI of the project is Associate Professor Kaius Sinnemäki. More information on the project is available at https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/linguistic-adaptation.

The project studies whether linguistic structures systematically adapt to sociolinguistic environments across languages. One of its main aims is to develop new methods for comparing sociolinguistic environments to one another by synthesizing the large-scale typological approach with rich sociolinguistic and sociohistorical analysis of societies. Sociolinguistic environments are analyzed by transforming sociolinguistic, ethnographic, and historical data as well as data acquired from specialists into a typology of sociolinguistic environments. The candidates will work primarily on the sociolinguistic and sociohistorical aspects of the project, actively collaborating with the other project members and participating in joint publications. The expertise of the selected candidates on a language family or geographical region(s) may be considered an asset.

The appointees to the positions must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline by the time of appointment, and possess the ability to conduct independent scientific research and the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the candidates are expected to have excellent knowledge of English.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The annual salary range will be approximately 41,000 EUR – 50,000 EUR (gross income). In addition, the university offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/working-at-the-university) assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.

The deadline for the application period is May 13, 2019 at 23.59 (local time GMT +3). More information about the positions and instructions for submitting an application are available at https://www.helsinki.fi/fi/avoimet-tyopaikat/two-postdoctoral-researchers.

Best regards,
Kaius Sinnemäki
