Dear colleagues,
Please find below an opportunity for a PhD position, with an application
deadline of December 18. Apologies for cross-posting.
Pavel
The Institute for Linguistics at the University of Münster, Germany,
invites applications for a position of
Doctoral Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)
(salary level TV-L E13, 65% FTE)
This position within general linguistics is funded for a three-year period.
The successful candidate will carry out a fieldwork-based study of
information structuring in natural interaction in a Trans-Himalayan
(Tibeto-Burman) language.
The PhD project will be part of ongoing research at the Institute, which is
dedicated to re-modelling Information Structure from a bottom-up
perspective. The goal is to explore the attention- and knowledge-monitoring
devices and multimodal interaction-managing strategies that contribute to
information structuring in natural communication. The position forms part
of the DFG-funded project on “Interactional Information Management” led by
Prof. Pavel Ozerov (see
https://www.uni-muenster.de/Sprachwissenschaft/en/forschung/Interaktionales_Informationsmanagement.html
for a short summary).
The target language can be a Trans-Himalayan (Tibeto-Burman) language of
the candidate’s expertise. Otherwise, a suitable language will be chosen,
according to the project needs and the candidate’s qualifications (such as
Karbi or Meitei, both spoken in Northeast India). The successful candidate
will join a dynamic research collaboration with an enthusiastic
international community of scholars working on languages from the Eastern
Himalayan region (Northeast India and the neighbouring areas of Myanmar,
Bangladesh, Tibet and Bhutan).
Münster is a medium-sized university town in north-western Germany with a
medieval old town and a bicycle-friendly atmosphere. The Institute for
Linguistics is located in the center of the old town.
The expected starting date of the position is *1 March 2021*.
The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed
to increasing the proportion of women academics. Consequently, we actively
encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent
qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered
within the framework of the legal possibilities. The University of Münster
is committed to employing more staff with disabilities. Candidates with
recognized severe disabilities who have equivalent qualifications are given
preference in hiring decisions, although some restrictions related to the
access to the field-site may apply.
Required qualifications:
- master’s degree in linguistics
- strong background in functional, corpus-based linguistic analysis
- familiarity with research methods of spontaneous speech, preferably from
an interactional perspective
- acquaintance with Trans-Himalayan (Tibeto-Burman) languages or other
languages of South/East-Asia is desirable
Applications should include:
- a statement about research experience and interests
- your CV with a list of publications/talks (if applicable)
- a writing sample (the master’s thesis or a substantive term paper)
Application deadline: *18 December 2020*
