We are really excited to welcome the new editors of Typological Studies in Language. This feels like a momentous occasion, which we would like to mark by offering a few words about the history of the series.

TSL began as in 1982 as a second companion series to the journal Studies in Language (which began in 1977) and Studies in Language Companion Series (which began in 1979). The founding editor of TSL, T. Givón, served in that role through 1995, shepherding the first 32 or so volumes to press. In 1995, Michael (Mickey) Noonan became editor (and Suzanne Kemmer and Spike Gildea became Assistant Editors) taking the series up to about 90 volumes. With Mickey’s untimely death in 2009, Spike became the third editor; in 2011 Fernando Zúñiga joined Spike and for the past 11 years we have been Co-Editors, stewarding the series through its 134th volume.

It is auspicious that, as the series enters its fifth decade, it also enters the time of its fifth and sixth Series Editors. Welcome and deep thanks in advance to Sonia and Jean-Cristophe for taking over this important series and carrying forward a proud tradition.

Best,
Fernando and Spike
