Everett's description of Pirahã as lacking embedded speech reports has
been challenged in work by Uli Sauerland. I would recommend that you
take a look at the contributions to Recursion Across Domains
(Cambridge University Press, 2018). Some of the analytic challenges
concerning parataxis versus hypotaxis in speech reports are discussed
at greater length in this Glossa article, which discusses the
Trans-New Guinean language Teiwa:
