Hi all,

The Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University, invites applications for a PhD student position in language documentation and description, focusing on Gawarbati, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Kunar-Chitral Valley (in the border area of Pakistan and Afghanistan):

The PhD position is part of the project Gawarbati – Documenting a vulnerable linguistic community in the Hindu Kush (funded by the Swedish Research Council, 2020-01500). It is a paid full-time position, based in Stockholm, Sweden.

The project studies one of the least known and lesser-described Indo-Aryan languages of the Hindi Kush region. The goal of this project is to collect, annotate, analyse and making available data for Gawarbati. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the speaker community and a language centre based in Pakistan. The local team of trained employees work mainly with data collection and transcription, while the focus of the work in Stockholm (including that of the PhD student) is to process, analyse and disseminate the data.

The doctoral student will work in close collaboration with the principal investigator, Henrik Liljegren, and the dissertation work is expected to have a focus with direct relevance to the project's focus, objectives and issues. There is some flexibility in the specific research profile, depending on the applicant’s previous studies, qualifications and research interests, but the data generated by the project should be used in a justifiable way. For more information about qualifications and required documents, see the full description (please, use the link above).
All applications must be submitted through the university recruitment system (again, use the link above), but I am happy to answer any remaining question you may have after having read the full description.

Please feel free to forward this advertisement to potential candidates.

Regards,
Henrik Liljegren
