Dear Sergey – Becker & Malchukov (2022) argue that the Vendler classes form a scale (the ‘actionality hierarchy’) in terms of their probability of occurring with imperfective vs. perfective viewpoints. This digests a lot of older literature, including Bohnemeyer & Swift (2004), which Becker & Malchukov build on and supersede. Plus they present a crosslinguistic corpus study in support of their hypothesis.

(Credit due: I became aware of Becker & Malchukov’s paper thanks to Martin Haspelmath’s Diversity Linguistics Seminar at the University of Leipzig.)

Another long-running theme in this area is the question of the contributions of lexicon, syntax, and pragmatics to lexical-aspectual properties. Bohnemeyer (2004) (somewhat en passant) sketches an account of the interactions (synthesizing a lot of the literature up to that point).

Dear colleagues,

Could you please suggest to me recent reference literature on the "Vendlerian" verbal actionality classes?

Best regards,

Sergey
