Dear colleagues:
As signalled in an earlier post to this list (December 12^th ), each
year a small number of permanent research positions in linguistics are
made available at the French National Centre for Scientific Research
(CNRS). Everyone who holds a PhD in linguistics can apply, irrespective
of their nationality. Applications are evaluated and ranked by a
committee of linguists. The deadline for applications this year is
February 9^th . More information can be found on the CNRS website
<https://www.cnrs.fr/en/competitive-entrance-examinations-researchers-womenmen>,
and in a guide for candidates
<https://www.cnrs.fr/sites/default/files/download-file/Guide%20concours%20chercheurs%202024_EN_V1.pdf>.
Note that CNRS is subdivided into disciplinary sections; and that
linguistics is Section 34.
There are three junior positions this year (/Chargé.e de recherche/ or
/CR/), versus seven senior positions (/Directeur/trice de recherche/ or
/DR/). The latter are in theory open to everyone, but due to budgetary
restrictions all or most of them will go to current junior researchers
at CNRS who apply for promotion. External applicants are allowed to
apply to both types of position simultaneously.
Research in France is organised in so-called research units, commonly
called /laboratories/, which typically host permanent researchers of
CNRS, as well as teachers at one or more affiliated universities.
Candidates for research positions at CNRS apply as individuals and are
evaluated as such, but are required to identify the research unit(s)
they wish to join and indicate how their planned research fits into the
research tradition of that unit. Typically, a letter of support from the
head of the proposed host unit will be expected.
Research units tend to specialise in one or more sub disciplines of
linguistics. LINGTYP subscribers may be particularly interested in
joining one of the research units that specialise in the study of
language diversity, typically combining field work with linguistic
typology. These units include:
CRLAO, specialising in the languages of East Asia
(http://crlao.ehess.fr/; crlao at ehess.fr)
DDL, with a variety of areal expertise (http://www.ddl.cnrs.fr;
francoise.rose at cnrs.fr)
LACITO, specialising in the study of languages without a written
tradition (https://lacito.cnrs.fr/; lacito.direction at cnrs.fr)
LLACAN, specialising in the languages of Africa
(https://llacan.cnrs.fr/; llacan.direction at cnrs.fr)
SEDYL, specialising in language contact and variation, focusing on a
number of areas, including South and Central America
(https://sedyl.cnrs.fr/; sophie.vassilaki at inalco.fr).
However, CNRS has many more research units, specialising in fields as
wide ranging as computer linguistics, Basque, the history of
linguistics, or phonetics and phonology. Do get in touch with your
closest colleagues working in France if you are interested in joining CNRS.
Best wishes from Paris,
Mark Van de Velde
