We are pleased to announce the publication of a collective volume on “Fillers – Hesitatives and placeholders”, edited by Brigitte Pakendorf & Françoise Rose and published by Language Science Press in its series “Research on Comparative Grammar” (https://langsci-press.org/catalog/book/484).

Fillers are non-silent linguistic devices used in disfluencies to gain time while searching for words; they are also frequently used intentionally to avoid words for various pragmatic reasons. Two types can be distinguished: placeholders, which are referential and morphosyntactically integrated, and hesitatives, which are neither integrated nor referential.

The collective volume comprises 10 in-depth descriptions of conventionalized fillers in languages from Eurasia, Papunesia, Australia, and the Americas, plus a comparison of fillers and general extenders in Tungusic languages; it starts off with a discussion of issues emerging from the previous literature and a new typology of fillers.

The entire volume or individual chapters can be downloaded free of charge from the publisher’s website.
