[Lingtyp] Limited call: WAWOW workshop on TAM-conditioned OV/VO alternations in West African languages

Dear colleagues,

We are organizing a small, discussion-oriented workshop at the LLACAN laboratory of CNRS in Villejuif, near Paris, on Monday 6 July 2026, just after ALT in Lyon.

The workshop will focus on SOV-SVO and OV/VO alternations in West African languages, especially TAM-conditioned variation and diachronic interpretation. We are particularly interested in contributions dealing with questions such as:

SAuxOV structures and related SOV-SVO alternations;

TAM-conditioned word order variation;

grammaticalization pathways involving auxiliaries and verbal morphology;

the relation between TAM and information structure in conditioning word order;

contact-induced convergence and areal diffusion;

the use of word order alternations in historical reconstruction.

The aim is to bring together a focused group of researchers working directly on these questions, with longer presentations and ample time for discussion rather than a standard conference format. Presentations will be 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for discussion.

We have room for a small number of additional contributions. If you are interested, please send an abstract or short expression of interest of up to one page, including a provisional title and a brief description of your proposed contribution.

Deadline for abstracts / expressions of interest: Monday 25 May 2026
Notification: early June 2026

The workshop will be hybrid. Unfortunately, we do not have funding for travel or accommodation, but lunch and coffee breaks will be provided for in-person participants.
