Dear colleagues,
Apologies for cross-posting.
The 32nd International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING 2027) will take place in Macau, China, May 9-14, 2027. This edition has a special theme that may be of particular interest to this list: NLP for Linguistics, with a focus on linguistic diversity.
The theme reverses the usual question. Instead of asking what linguistics can do for NLP, it asks what NLP and large language models can do for the scientific study of language as it is spoken around the world, including variation, universals and typology. We especially welcome:
- work on under-researched languages, varieties and linguistic phenomena
- computational approaches to typology, variation and diachrony
- work addressing the needs of underrepresented speaker communities
- critical assessments of what current models can and cannot tell us about language
- new NLP-based methods for linguistic research
Practical details:
- Submissions go through ACL Rolling Review (ARR). Deadline: October 12, 2026 (AoE).
- Long papers up to 8 pages, short papers up to 4 pages, plus unlimited references and appendices.
- Papers already reviewed in earlier ARR cycles can also be committed to COLING 2027.
- The special theme is chosen at commitment time (after reviews). For the initial ARR submission, pick the closest standard track.
- Notification: February 10, 2027. Virtual presentations: May 6-7; main conference in person: May 9-14.
Full call: https://2027.coling-iccl.org/calls/main_conference_papers/
COLING has always had a place for linguistically oriented work, and this theme is a real opportunity for typologists and field linguists working with computational methods. Please share it with colleagues and students who might be interested.
Best wishes,
Stergios Chatzikyriakidis
Publicity/Social Media Chair, COLING 2027
