                            A two-day meeting on
 
                              FACTS AND EVENTS
                    IN THE SEMANTICS OF NATURAL LANGUAGE
 
          Istituto per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica (IRST)
                               Trento, Italy
                             28-29 August 1995
 
The view that an adequate account of the semantics of natural language calls
for some theory of facts, events, and such-like entities has been a focus of
great debate in the last three decades, both among philosophers and among
linguists and cognitive scientists. Tense and aspect, factives, adverbial
modification, nominalization, plurals, naked infinitives, causal relations,
temporal reasoning, all of these (to mention just a few) are phenomena which
have led to the formulation of overall semantic theories making explicit use
of such entities. The aim of this conference is to bring together people
actively working on these issues. Besides reporting on recent trends and
achievements, it is expected that the meeting will be an opportunity to
address in some depth the interplay between foundational philosophical issues
and their lingustic applications.

International Cognitive Linguistics Association

The 4th International Cognitive Linguistics Association (ICLA) conference
will take place in Albuquerque, NM from July 16-21, 1995.
 
This year's plenary speakers are:
 
    Antonio Damasio (University of Iowa)
    Gilles Fauconnier (University of California-San Diego)
    Gisela Redeker (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam)
    Claudia Brugman (University of Otago)
    Arie Verhagen (Utrecht University)
    Charles Fillmore (University of California-Berkeley)
 
In addition, we have planned sessions to include papers by more than 160
scholars, and special plenary sessions on recent topics in cognitive
linguistics.
 
The conference will take place on the campus of the University of New
Mexico (UNM). Albuquerque lies between the foothills of the Sandia
Mountains (with peaks of more than 10,000 feet) and the West Mesa (which is
dotted with the cinder cones of long-extinct volcanoes); dividing the city
is the winding Rio Grande valley, famous for its Bosque nature preserve. At
an altitude of roughly 5000 feet, the university campus enjoys warm summer
days and cool nights. Excursions to nearby pueblos, historic Santa Fe, and
the Sandia Mountains are planned.
 
Also taking place at UNM during the summer of 1995 is the Linguistic
Society of America's Linguistic Institute. The Institute runs for six
weeks, from late June to early August. Several conferences of interest are
planned to precede and follow the 1995 ICLA conference.
 
Early registration (before May 1) for the conference is $75 for ICLA members and
$130 for non-members. A late of $25 will be charged. Student registration
