18th Annual Language Testing Research Colloquium
                     CALL FOR PROPOSALS
                        LTRC 96
      July 31 - August 3, 1996 in Tampere, Finland
Hosted by the University of Tampere and the University of Jyvaskyla
Theme: New Contexts, Goals, and Alternatives in Language Assessment

Deadline for proposals: November 30, 1995

We would like to invite proposal abstracts for papers,
posters/demonstrations and work in progress sessions for the 18th
Annual Language Testing Research Colloquium. The abstracts should
reach us no later than November 30, 1995. In accordance with the theme
of the conference, we invite papers especially in the following broad
areas:

- Assessment in the service of learning / teaching (e.g. assessment in
relation to learner autonomy and learner self-direction, the role of
self-assessment) - Portfolio assessment (e.g. its role in formal
certification, combining process and product-oriented assessment) -
Impact of assessment on learning (e.g. comparing the effects of
process and product-oriented assessment) - Multicultural education and
assessment (e.g. cultural fairness, equivalence of language
qualifications, transparency of certificates)

However, many other interesting developments have taken place in
language testing research during the past decade, some of which are
listed below. Proposals including these topic areas are also warmly
welcome:

- Processing under test and non-test conditions
- Assessor performance in performance assessment
- The role of measurement models in language testing
- Criterion-referenced testing
- Values and ethical considerations in testing
- Socio-political aspects of testing

Although we hope to have most presentations in the above areas, we
also welcome other contributions from the whole range of language
testing topics.

PRESENTATION FORMATS

Papers: This format is best suited for theoretically-oriented
presentations, or the presentation of complex research. The
presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a 10-minute
question period.

Posters/demonstrations: These typically present non-complex
experiments, test development projects, new tests or technological
innovations. Presenters will be allowed five minutes to introduce
their posters to all participants.

Work in progress: This format is best suited for presenting ongoing
research, and research still in the planning stage. Presenters will
have an opportunity to discuss their ongoing research or research
plans, and receive feedback on how best to proceed. Presenters will
have five minutes to introduce their work to all participants.

In addition to these presentation formats, proposals for roundtable
sessions on topics of current interest in language testing are also
welcome.

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS
Proposal abstracts may not exceed one page typed single-spaced and
must be submitted in four paper copies. DO NOT SEND YOUR ABSTRACT BY
E-MAIL. The abstracts should be submitted without indication of author
names or institutions. The following information should be provided on
a separate sheet (single copy):

address(es);

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONFERENCE VENUE
Tampere, Finland's second largest city, is easily accessible from all
over the world. There are several daily connections by plane, train
and bus from Helsinki (and from Tampere there are convenient train and
bus connections to Jyvaskyla for AILA 96). Founded in 1779, Tampere is
set on a narrow ridge between two lakes. It is an important center for
education and research with two major universities and a number of
other institutes of higher education. The city is also known for its
flourishing and versatile cultural life.

The conference venue, Hotel Rosendahl, is an attractive hotel situated
in a beautiful park area by Lake Pyhajarvi, within easy reach of
downtown Tampere. Less expensive accommodation in hostels will also be
available. A varied social program is being planned for both delegates
and accompanying persons.
