British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL)

BAAL Book Prize 1995
The Shortlist
Each year, the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL)
makes an award to an outstanding book in Applied Linguistics
published in the previous year. Last year's winner was Ruth
Lesser and Lesley Milroy (1993) _Linguistics and Aphasia_.
Longmans. This year forty-one nominations were received from
publishers worldwide.
I am now able to announce the shortlisted titles for 1995 which are:
Alistair Pennycook (1994) _The Cultural Politics of English
as an International Language_. Longmans.
Ulrike Meinhof and Kay Richardson (eds) (1994) _Text,
discourse, and context: Representations of Poverty in
Britain. Longmans.
Jim Hurford (1994) _Grammar_. Cambridge University Press.
Joanna Channell (1994) _Vague Language_. Oxford University
Press.
Also commended by the shortlisters were:
David Barton (1994) _The Ecology of Literacy_. Blackwells.
J. Gibbons (ed) (1994) _Language and the Law_. Longmans.
Judith Strozer (1994) _Language Acqusition after Puberty_.
Georgetown University Press.
The winner of the BAAL Book Prize will be announced at the BAAL
Annual Meeting at Southampton, England (September 14th -
16th).

wants to know more about the administration of the prize is

Annual Meeting, which is on the theme of Language and Education,
