Dear Colleagues,
 
The following postdoctoral fellowships are available again this coming
year. Though the competition is across all humanistic disciplines,
three times in the past, one of the awards has been made to a
linguist.  We would like to encourage applications for these
fellowships from linguists, especially those whose humanistic ties
(e.g. with specific language studies, philosophy, etc.) and research
excellence would make them competetive candidates.
 
We attach the relevant application information. Further information

ANDREW W. MELLON POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN THE HUMANITIES
AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY for 1996-97
 
To be awarded to highly promising scholar-teachers in the Humanities,
these non-faculty one-year positions will carry department affiliation
and limited teaching duties, and the opportunity for scholarly work
and intellectual growth.  The Ph.D. must be in hand by September,
1996, and preferably received within the last seven years.  The award
carries an annual stipend of $37,750 and may be renewed for a second
year.  U.S.  citizenship is not required.
 
Three letters of reference and application papers for 1996-97 are due
as early as possible and must be postmarked no later than November 13,
1995.  Because of the volume of papers expected, this deadline is
firm.  Candidates will be notified of the results by early March,
1996.

Applications will be accepted in the following disciplines:
 
Art History, Asian Languages and Literatures, Classics, Comparative
Literature, Drama History, English, French Language and Literature,
German Language and Literature, History, History of Science, Italian
Language and Literature, Linguistics, Music History, Philosophy,
Portuguese Language and Literature, Religious Studies, Spanish
Language and Literature, Slavic Languages and Literatures,
 
 
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
 
APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING, AND EACH SECTION SHOULD BE
CLEARLY NUMBERED AND CLIPPED TOGETHER.  (Printed forms are not
required for Sections 2 through 6.)
 
SECTION 1 Complete both copies of the form and attach to the front of
the application with a curriculum vitae.
 
SECTION 2 A complete list, in bibliographic form, of scholarly
publications.
 
This section should be grouped as books, monographs, significant book
reviews, and articles.  Indicate publisher, date of publication,
volume and page numbers of the scholarly journal in which reviews or
articles appeared, or, if unpublished, indicate whether the work has
been accepted for publication, etc.
 
FOR SECTIONS 3, 4 AND 5, PLEASE GIVE BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS, each 1 - 3 pages
long.
 
SECTION 3 The dissertation and any other previous work or work in
progress.
 
SECTION 4 Areas of teaching interests and experience.  Course syllabi
and description of course material may be attached to this section.
 
SECTION 5 Proposed scholarly work during the coming academic year.
 
SECTION 6 Please arrange to have three references sent to us from
people who are familiar with your scholarly work.  These references
may be included in a placement dossier, but at least two should have
been written within the last year.
 
Please do not send names and addresses of referees requesting us to
write to them on your behalf for references.
 
NOTES: You may attach an appendix containing any additional remarks or
material you think the selection committee would find useful and which
is not covered by the above.  However, we regret that no materials can
be returned unless accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope;
because of space limitations, application materials supplied by
candidates cannot be held over from year to year.
 
If you would like to have receipt of your papers acknowledged, please
include a stamped, self-addressed postcard.
 
NB: These awards are not intended for Stanford students who have
received, or are about to receive, Stanford Ph.D.'s.
