Position Announcement
 
 
The University of Maryland at College Park announces a new position
in Psychology/Neuropsychology of Language. The position is tenure
track at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in the Fall semester
of 1997. This appointment bridges three programs at UMCP: the
Department of Linguistics, the Department of Psychology and the
newly established Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science.
We seek candidates with established records of research excellence
who are interested in working on topics in neurolinguistics and/or
psycholinguistics and who can teach courses in linguistics and
psychology, as well as courses in a unique and exciting
interdisciplinary program. Ph.D. is required by August, 1997. For best

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department
of French, to take up appointment on 1 April 1997 or as soon as
possible thereafter.  Applications for this post are invited from
candidates with a record of research and publication in the field of
eighteenth-century French studies.  An ability additionally to teach
nineteenth-century French literature would be an advantage but is not
a requirement.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach
eighteenth-century French literature, thought and history for the
Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos; to collaborate in the M.Phil. in
European Literature and supervise doctoral research on
eighteenth-century French; and to participate fully in the language
teaching and first-year literature programme of the Department.
 
University Assistant Lecturers are appointed for three years,
with the possibility of reappointment for two years.  The statutory
limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years,
but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are
considered for possible appointment  to the office of University
Lecturer during the course of their tenure.
 
The pensionable scales of stipends are:
 
University Lecturer:  GBP18,294 a year, rising by eleven annual
increments to GBP28,215.  There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
 
University Assistant Lecturer:  GBP15,154 a year, rising by six
annual increments to GBP19,848.

Carleton College wishes to appoint a Distinguished Visiting Professor of
Linguistics for the winter and spring terms, 1998 (January 5 to June 3,
two-thirds of an academic year). Rank is open, though preference will be
given to those already holding senior appointments.
 
Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college located in Northfield,
Minnesota, which is about an hour's drive south of the Twin Cities of
Minneapolis and St. Paul. We have a small but exuberant Linguistics
Program, which enjoys the cooperation and assistance of faculty in related
departments including Asian Languages, Mathematics and Computer Science,
Philosophy, Psychology, and English.
 
Over the two terms at Carleton, the visitor will teach two advanced level
courses for linguistics majors (one course each term). These courses are
likely to have relatively small enrollments of five to ten very highly
motivated students. We wish to have a course on semantics (with a
prerequisite in formal logic) taught in the winter term. In the spring, the
visitor is invited to choose a course on some topic or another in either
syntax or phonology. Also in the winter term, we would like the visitor to
teach an entry level course on some mutually agreed upon topic. Enrollment
in this course is likely to be around twenty. In the spring term, we invite
the visitor to lead a small faculty reading group in some area in which the
visitor has special expertise.
 
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
