Subject:   ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP (96 Spring) UPDATE
 
 
            ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP 1996 (Spring): UPDATE
     Educational institutions in China have accepted 6 candidates
recommended by WCCEC as the recipients of the Scholarship for the
Spring Semester of 1996. These finalists are from Wake Forest
University, University of Maryland, Hawaii Pacific University,
Lake Erie College, Reed College, and Oregon Institute of
Technology. All of them will come to Washington D.C. by the end
of February to participate in a one-week pre-departure
Orientation Program sponsored by WCCEC and the University of
Maryland. Announcement for ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP 1996 (Fall) will
appear on professional newsletters and will also be posted on
this List.
     As is the practice in the past, WCCEC maintains the files of
all the applicants who were not chosen until the deadline for the
next group.  Please remember that you have to send to WCCEC,
before the deadline, a cover letter to activate your application.
      Attached below is a brief introduction to the Scholarship,
for the benefit of those who missed the previous announcements:
 
 ====================ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP=====================
 
Jointly established by the Cross-Culture Education Center of
Washington (WCCEC) and educational institutions both in China and
the United States, the scholarship is open to all native speakers
of English who are interested in various aspects of China and the
Chinese language. Through both of its programs (Program A:
one-year; Program B: one-semester), the scholarship offers an
opportunity to study Chinese or conduct a related research in
China, to teach English in China and to travel in China (Program
A only). The Scholarship covers all travel expenses (round trip)
from the U.S. departure point to the hosting institution in
China, accommodation, health insurance and provides the recipient
with a monthly stipend to cover food and other expenses. For more
