Specifiers
Information for attending the Specifiers Conference to be Held at King's
manor, York 21st - 23rd march. Details may also be found on our web site
(see below):
The Specifiers Conference is the first of a series of international
colloquia to be held by the Department of Language and Linguistic
Science, University of York. It will be held from 21st - 23rd March in
the King's Manor, St Leonards Place, next to the Art Gallery in the
City Centre (NOT at the Department which is out of town at the
University). Talks will be held in the Huntingdon Room, with a book
display in the Anteroom. The organising committee is David Adger,
Susan Pintzuk, Bernadette Plunkett and Georges Tsoulas (respectively
da4, sp20, bp4 and gt3 at tower.york.ac.uk). There is a dedicated email
account for the conference (lang7 at tower.york.ac.uk). Enquiries should
be sent to this address.
Accommodation: we have reserved a number of rooms in Fairfax House (99
Heslington Road), about 25 minutes walk from King's Manor. Rooms here
are 16 per night, payable on arrival. We still have a number of rooms
available on this block booking, and you should contact us immediately
if you would like to reserve one of these (by end February at
latest). There may still be rooms available at Fairfax House after
this date, but you will have to contact them direct (Tel: (01904)
432095).
If you have accommodation at Fairfax House, the keys are available
2.00 - 4.45 daily. On the day before the conference starts, we will
take any remaining keys to the registration desk at King's Manor at
4.30 and we will be there until 8.30. If you are planning to arrive
after then on the Wednesday, please let us know in advance. Your keys
will be available at Derwent College Porters Lodge, at the
University. This is open 24 hours. You should take a cab there.
We will arrange transport into town each morning, to arrive in good
time for the first paper.
If you prefer somewhere closer to town, we have included a list of
B&B's and Hotels. You should not count on being able to simply book
something on arrival, since York is a popular tourist attraction, and
it is unlikely you will be able to find accommodation at such short
notice.

All the following B&Bs Guest Houses and Hotels are situated within a
10-15 minute walk distance (or less) from the conference site.

York Visitor Guide from the Tourist Office there.
Travel: York Rail station is a major British Rail station and has
excellent connections with London and Manchester. Trains from London
Kings Cross are every half hour at peak travel times, and every hour
otherwise. You should ask for a Supersaver Return from Kings Cross to
York if you are not planning to travel before 9am, or on the outward
journey between 4.30 and 6.30 pm.
Trains from Manchester Airport are hourly on weekdays and slightly less
frequent on Sundays. The times are as follows:
trains run from Manchester airport to York on Wednesday as follows
Dep 3.28 5.13 6.23 8.26 9.28 hourly till 19.28
then 21.28

have their own car parks where visitors may park. There is long-term
parking (approx #5.00 per day) ten minutes walk from King's Manor
(Uniion Terrace, off Gillygate)
Events: There will be a wine reception the evening before the
conference starts in the King's Manor. The reception will run from
7.00 pm to 8.30 pm. We will also be arranging an evening out (either
dinner or a party), probably on the Thursday evening. Further
information at registration.

us if you could let us know if you are planning to attend, and if you
are eligible for a canference fee waiver (see below).Registration will
take place 5 - 7 in the Anteroom in Kings Manor the day before the
conference starts (immediately before the wine reception). Please let
us know by email if you need childcare, have special dietary
requirements and plan to attend the meal, or if you have any other
special requests.
Conference Fee: We would like to make the conference as cheap as
possible for students, so there will be no conference fee for students
or unwaged participants. There will be a flat conference fee of =A315
sterling, payable at registration for all other participants
(inc. speakers).
