Graduate Studies in English Language

We welcome applications, at any time of year (although most students
begin in September), from people wishing to take advanced courses and
degrees in English Language topics.  The usual pre-requisitie is a
good undergraduate degree.
 
We currently offer MA's by coursework in the following areas:
	Applied Linguistics
	Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language
	English for Special Purposes
	Special Applications of Linguistics
	Translation Studies (Linguistics)
 
We also supervise M Phil (two-year) and Ph D research degrees,
undertaken by written thesis.  Both the MA and research degrees may be
taken part-time or full-time, and the Ph. D. can be taken via one of
several alternative programs of coursework, with full or quite limited
residence in Birmingham.
 
The School of English at Birmingham has an international reputation in
many fields of language study, including the following: computational
linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies, genre studies
and English for Specific Purposes, language policy, language and
ideology, corpus linguistics and lexicology, intonation, discourse
analysis, stylistics, and forensic linguistics.
 
Birmingham, Britain's second city, is a meeting-place of rich and
varied cultures, and a stimulating place to live.  And tuition and
living expenses are quite moderate: tuition fees for a full-time
non-EEC graduate student are US$9,000 per annum; living expenses, very
approximately, could be around US$7,000.  A year (or more) of
Ph.D. coursework at the University of Birmingham is well worth
considering!
