Approximately 10 teaching positions are available in the Division of
English Language and Applied Linguistics (ELAL) of the National Institute
of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. ELAL offers
academic programmes leading to a BA with Diploma in Education, MA
(Applied Linguistics) and PhD. The Division is responsible for primary and
secondary language teacher education programmes at the pre-service
and in-service levels. ELAL also offers spoken and written language
development courses to all students at the Institute.
 
Due to anticipated expansion in student numbers, ELAL invites
applications for positions in the following four areas: (1) academic, (2)
pedagogical, (3) communications skills, and (4) English for Academic
Purposes (EAP). NB: In addition to their lecturing duties, all NIE staff are
expected to supervise students during the school practicum.
 
(1)  Academic positions with a specialisation in one or more of the
following:
Psycholinguistics
Developmental psycholinguistics
Second language acquisition
Language testing and assessment
Language research design
Functional grammar
Grammar and syntax applications in pedagogical contexts
Computers in language teaching and language research
Language dysfunction and remediation
Semantics, lexicography and vocabulary building
Bilingualism and/or translation
Computational linguistics
Academic writing for undergraduates
Applied linguistics for introductory undergraduate courses
 
Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD with a proven research
recond in the area of specialisation. Experience in teaching, teacher
education, or classroom-based research would be desirable.
 
(2)  Pedagogical positions with specialisation in one or more of the
following:
 
Primary teacher education
Second language teaching and learning
Reading theory and pedgogy
Listening and speaking theory and pedagogy
Literacy development
Language teaching curriculum
Language diagnosis and remediation
Language testing and assessment
Language materials development
Educational technology in language teaching
Language across the curriculum
Multi-cultural childrens reading programmes
 
Qualifications: Candidates with a PhD will have an advantage. In addition
they should possess a professional teaching qualification and relevant
qualified teaching experience.
 
(3)  Communication skills positions with specialisation in one or more of the
following:
 
Oral communication
Classroom communication
Voice production
Speech therapy
Oral language diagnosis and remediation
Oral language testing and assessment
 
Qualifications: Candidates must have an MA and other relevant
qualifications in their area of specialisation, with a minimum of four years of
related teaching experience.
 
(4)  English for Academic Purposes positions to teach and help administer
an intensive communications skills programme. This is a rigorous 6-month
course which prepares EFL students for an English medium University
education in fields of study such as engineering, computer science and
business administration.
 
Qualifications: Candidates must have a minimum of an MA in TESOL or
Applied Linguistics and four years full-time experience at the tertiary level
with two years in EAP.
