AN EPSRC RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS
AT SOAS, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON
The Department of Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African
Studies (SOAS) of the University of London is pleased to announce the
availability of one EPSRC Research Studentship tenable at SOAS for the
1997-1998 academic session. This studentship is available for
candidates wishing to enroll in the SOAS MPhil/PhD programme in
Linguistics, with a specialisation in Computational Linguistics or
NLP. The EPSRC Research Studentship is for a period of three years. It
covers tuition and a maintenance grant of stlg6,855 (London rate) per
year. To be eligible for the full grant, you must be (i) a UK
resident, and (ii) have a BA or MA degree in Linguistics or
Computational Linguistics with a grade of at least 2.1.
How to Apply
If you have already submitted an application for the SOAS M.Phil in
Linguistics, and if your research proposal is in the area of
Computational Linguistics or NLP, then please send a note to the
M.Phil convenor Dr. Wynn Chao (wc at soas.ac.uk) indicating your wish to
be considered for this studentship. If you have not yet applied, then
you must obtain the SOAS Postgraduate Prospectus which contains an
application form for acceptance into the SOAS Linguistics MPhil/PhD
programme (you can do this by contacting the Departmental secretary
Anne Rowlands at ar at soas.ac.uk). Please include a note together with
your applic ation indicating that you wish to be considered for the
Studentship. Your research proposal must be in the area of
Computational Linguistics or NLP. No additional application forms are
necessary. Candidates will be judged on their previous academic
record, their research proposal, and relevant experience in the area.

All submissions must be received by 30 May 1997. A decision will be
announced on or before 15 June 1997.

BEST STUDENT PAPER PRIZE
______________
Papers accepted for presentation at the ESSLLI'97 student session can
be considered for the best student paper prize. It will be sponsored
by the French publisher Adosa.
This prize will consist of :
. several books in Logic, Linguistics and/or Computer Science, for a total
value of 3.000 FF (approximately 470 Ecu) and chosen by the winner among
editors from the European Union.
. plus the entire Adosa's collection (in French) of the "Langues naturelles
et traitement de l'information" ("Natural Language and Information
Processing") series.
Students who want their paper to be considered for the prize should
submit (at the beginning of the Summer School) three copies of an
extended abstract of their paper (about 1O pages).
The best paper will be selected by the following Committee:

The Committee will base its decision on the written extended abstract
rather than the oral presentation.
The prize will be awarded during the last ESSLLI party (on Thursday,
August 21). The winner will receive there the Adosa's series. Then,
he will send to Adosa the list of books he/she wants to receive. These
books will be sent to him/her directly.
