This is an announcement for a SECOND Assistant Professor position in
Linguistics at the University of Delaware to begin in September 1998, and
is NOT an extension of the application deadline for the search announced in
Summer 1997. Candidates who have applied for the first position will
automatically be considered for the second position, unless they request
otherwise. Candidates who wish to receive full consideration for BOTH open

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Delaware is seeking an
Assistant Professor, tenure track, with a specialization in one or more of
the following areas: computational linguistics, semantics, syntax,
theoretical second language acquisition.

The individual will be expected to contribute to the current strengths of
the department in theoretical linguistics, and to the integration of
Linguistics and Cognitive Science (including researchers in the following
areas: Psychology, Computer Science, Philosophy, Neuroscience, Educational
Studies, Applied Science and Engineering Laboratory). The successful
candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate level courses in his/her
area, as well as some undergraduate service courses. The position will
begin September 1, 1998. Ph.D. is required by time of appointment.

Interested candidates should send: a letter of application detailing how
they meet the position description, CV, samples of research/publications,
the names of three referees. The candidate should also ask the referees to
send letters of recommendation directly to the Search Committee. All

February 2nd, 1998.

It is likely that we will have a vacancy for someone to teach mainly
syntax during the second semester of this year (Feb-May 1998) at
University of Ulster. We need someone who can teach an introductory
course in Minimalist syntax, a final-year undergraduate option in an
area of their specialisation, and contribute to another course eg
semantics or psycholinguistics. The commitment would be around 9 hours'
teaching per week which would be paid on an hourly rate of around
#30/hour. Anyone interested should contact me.

Appliations are invited for the post of Professor of Linguistics. The
successful candidate would be required to assume duty on 1 July 1998, or
earlier if feasible.

DUTIES: 	Undergraduate teaching, graduate supervision and appropriate
administration. Particular challenges will involve expanded student numbers
at all levels, the development of interdisciplinary courses and preserving
a strong commitment to research excellence.

In the recently restructured Faculty of Arts, Linguistics remains an
independent discipline with its own core courses, major, honours degree and
service teaching in a School of Philosophy and Linguistics. The appointee
will assume duty virtually at the inception of this new arrangement and
will therefore assist in its evolution.

QUALIFICATIONS: 	PhD in Linguistics, appropriate seniority and broad
experience in one or more core areas of the discipline. The appointee will
have opportunities to develop courses and research projects with a local
focus, therefore an interest in African linguistic issues--while not
essential--will be an advantage.

SALARY: 	negotiable in the range R117 636 - R138 540 per annum
