LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE
Simpson, Paul (1997) Language through Literature: An introduction. Routledge
London and New York.
Paul Simpson provides a concise introduction to the English language
through the medium of English literature. Through the use of
examples from poetry prose and drama, this book offers a
lively and accessible guide to important concepts and techniques
in English language study.
LEXICAL ACQUISITION:
Boguraev, Branimir and Jame Pustejovsky (eds) (1996) Corpus Processing
for Lexical Acquisition. MIT Press. Cambridge MA
Bringing together a balanced blend of the theoretical and practical,
the contributions provide the most recent look at lexical acquisition
techniques and practices. These include coping with unknown
lexicalizations, task driven lexical induction, categorization of
lexical units, lexical semantics from corpus analysis and evaluating
lexical acquisition.
TRANSLATION STUDIES:
Hatim, Basil, and Ian Mason (1997) The Translater as communicator. Routledge
London and New York
The authors argue that the division of the subject into literary
and non-literary, technical and non-technical, is unhelpful and
misleading. Instead of dwelling on these differentials, the
authors focus on what common ground exists between these distinction.
The proposed model is presented through a series of case studes
ranging from legal texts to poems, each of which focuses on one
particular feature of text constitution, while not losing sight of
how this contributes to the whole analytic apparatus.
HISTORICAL:
Trask, R.L. (1997) The History of Basque. Routledge, London and New York
This book provides a comprehensive survey of all that is known about
the prehistory of the Basque language, including pronunciation, the
grammar and the vocabulary. It also provides a long critical evaluation
of the search for relatives, as well as a thumbnail sketch of the
language, a thumbnail sketch of the language, a summary of its
typological features, an external history and an extensive Bibliography
ACQUISITION OF SYNTAX
McDaniels, Dana, Cecile McKee, and Helen Smith Cairns (eds) (1996) Methods
for Assessing Children's Syntax. MIT press, Cambridge MA
This book is designed in part as a handbook to assist students
and researchers in the choice and use of methods for investigating
children's grammar. For example, a method can be chosen based
on what is measured, and who the target subject is. In addition to
the selection of methods, there are also pointers for designing and
conducting experimental studies and for evaluating research.
