CONFERENCE ON THE PHONOLOGICAL WORD

October 24-26 1997

Zentrum fuer Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft
Berlin, Germany

The theme of this conference is the role of the prosodic word in
phonology and morphology. In addition to several invited speakers
there will be slots for approximately 10-16 papers. Invited speakers
who have agreed to participate are:

Geert Booij (University of Nijmegen)
Aditi Lahiri (University of Konstanz)
Elizabeth Selkirk (University of Massachusetts at Amherst)

Abstracts are invited on papers which focus on the role
of the phonological word with emphasis on the following topics:

1. The relationship between morphosyntactic and prosodic structure
2. The role of the phonological word in connected speech phenomena
    (e.g.cliticization).
3. The relationship between phonological words and other prosodic
consitituents
4. The ranking of alignment constraints referring to prosodic words
5. Minimal word phenomena
6. The phonetic correlates of prosodic structure

Papers will be 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes discussion. Deadline
for submission of abstracts is July 15, 1997.  Send four copies of an
abstract (maximum 2 pages; three anonymous, one camera ready with name
and affiliation) to:

Conference on "The word as a phonetic unit"

October 22-23 1997

The theme of this conference is the phonetic appearance of words in
connected speech. In addition to several invited speakers there will be
slots for approximately 8-12 papers. Invited speakers who have agreed to
participate are:

William Barry (University of Saarbruecken)
Bernd KrF6ger (University of Cologne)
Hans G. Tillmann (University of Munich)

Abstracts are invited on papers which focus on the word in connected
speech with emphasis on the following topics:

1. Canonical word forms and variants in connected speech
2. Variation due to speaking styles
3. Residual cues in reduced forms
4. Boundary markers
5. Articulatory timing vs. articulatory reorganisation
6. "Realisationsphonologie" and/or phonetic readout

Papers will be 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes discussion. Deadline

Although the deadline for full-paper submissions to the 1997 Cognitive
Science Conference is now past, you still have until Tuesday, March 4,
to deliver a hardcopy one-page abstract. These submissions must follow
the instructions for authors available at the conference web page:

Authors of abstracts are guaranteed one page in the proceedings and a
poster at the conference, but on one condition: the presenter must be
a member of the Cognitive Science Society or they must join when the
send in their final, camera-ready copy on April 29. More information

If you have already sent us a six-page paper, you do not need to submit
a separate abstract. Even if your paper is not accepted, you will still
have a chance to contribute an abstract to the proceedings. If you have
