The Philipps-Universitaet Marburg, Germany, offers the position
described below. The rank is that of an assistant professor. Please

Im Fachbereich Allgemeine und Germanistische Linguistik und Philologie 
Institut fuer Germanistische Sprachwissenschaft  der
Philipps-Universitaet Marburg ist zum 01.04.1997  befristet auf 3 Jahre
 (Verlaengerung um weitere 3 Jahre moeglich) die Stelle eines/einer
WISSENSCHAFTLICHEN ASSISTENTEN/-IN (C 1 BBesGes)
(im Beamtenverhaeltnis auf Zeit gem. ' 41 HUG)
 mit dem Schwerpunkt Morphologie und/oder Phonologie 
zu besetzen.

Eine Reduzierung der Arbeitszeit ist unter der Voraussetzung der '' 85a
und 92a Hessisches Beamtengesetz grundsaetzlich moeglich.

Aufgabengebiet: Wissenschaftliche Dienstleistungen in Forschung und
Lehre, die auch dem Erwerb einer weiteren wissenschaftlichen
Qualifikation auf dem Gebiet mit dem Schwerpunkt Morphologie und/oder
Phonologie foerderlich sind. Zeit zu eigener wissenschaftlicher Arbeit
wird gegeben.

Voraussetzungen: Qualifizierte Promotion in den genannten Schwerpunkten;
Forschungs- und Lehrerfahrung. Erwartet wird die Mitarbeit an
Forschungsprojekten und die Absicht zur Habilitation. Die Stelle ist
Prof. Dr. Richard Wiese zugeordnet.

Robust Speech Coders for Noisy Environments - in particular the Motorola
Iridium LEO Satellite system

The University of Wollongong and the Motorola Australian Research Centre,
Sydney invite applications for an Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)
PhD scholarship. The research will focus on the design of speech coders to
operate in a variety of background and channel noise environments. In
particular, the research is focussed on the Iridium LEO satellite system.
Appplicants should have a degree in the field of Electrical Engineering
(including Electronics, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering) with
Honours at Class 1. Potential candidates should be enthusiastic to research
in the areas of signal processing and, in particular speech coding. A
strong mathematical and signal processing background would be desirable.

The research will be performed within the 'Whisper' labs speech group
(http://www.whisper.elec.uow.edu.au) which is part of The Institute for
Telecommunications Research (http://www.snrc.uow.edu.au) at the University
of Wollongong.

The APA(I) stipend is for $20,180 pa for three years (tax free) plus
relocation and thesis allowance. The award may be further supplemented by
Motorola depending on the quality of the succesful candidate.

a researcher in text interpretation, information filtering, retrieval and
integration, fact extraction. If you are interested in independent,
innovative work and leadership of small R&D teams you will find this an

Carnegie Group, located in Pittsburgh, PA, has a strong record of technology
development and of practical, deployed applications in text processing.
Examples include
 * TIPSTER/UNDERLINE - we are developing text summarization technology and
tools, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University;
 * the CONSTRUE/TIS  system  we developed for Reuters Ltd. to categorize
a database of news stories; CONSTRUE achieved 92% recall, 90%
precision  on  a  88  category  set  covering  general economic  news;
 * TCS (Text  Categorization  Shell) is a generic shell that
categorizes  a  stream  of texts into a predetermined set of categories
based on content;
 * Situational Filter - a project to develop an approach to categorizing and
filtering battlefield  message traffic "tuned" to the commander's current
view of the situation;
 * JASPER (Journalist's Assistant for Preparing Earnings Reports)
takes as input a live feed of company press releases from PR
Newswire, extracts  a  predetermined  set of information, reformats that
information into a candidate Reuters news story and ships it off to a
financial journalist  for validation;
 * CAT is a large machine translation project for Caterpillar Corporation,
being developed by Carnegie Group in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon
University's Center for Machine Translation;
 * commercial software products such as NameFinder - extractor of names
entities, and ClearCheck - controlled authoring environment.

                  POSITION DESCRIPTION
                  ====================

  This researcher will join an R&D team dedicated to creation and early
investigation of advanced technologies. She/he will focus on projects
in the areas of information filtering, retrieval and integration, natural
text processing, fact extraction.

Her/his responsibilities would include:

 - lead development of innovative ideas and preparation of powerful,
winning research proposals for Government R&D funding, in cooperation with
Business Development group;

 - act as a Principal Investigator or a key researcher on a variety of
research and technology development projects;

 - interface with customers;

 - lead rapid prototyping of proof of concept demonstrations;

 - write and publish conference papers, journal articles.

 - support transition of promising technologies into engineering
organization
