			   JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
	  INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND PHILOLOGY, ACADEMIA SINICA

     The Linguistics Division of the Institute of History and
Philology, Academia Sinica invites applications from citizens of the
Republic of China for research positions leading toward tenure track
posts. Currently, one tenure-track position is open, but non-tenure
track post-doctoral positions pending budgetary approval are also
available. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be
given to those in the following fields: phonology (and phonetics),
semantics, Chinese dialect studies, and Chinese minority languages.
     Applicants already holding a Ph.D. will be considered for the
position of Assistant Research Fellow (equivalent to Assistant
Professor) or Post-doctoral Research Specialist.  These are purely
research positions and no teaching is required. The minimum salary is
NT807,720 (about US$29,915)/yr for Assistant Research Fellow and
NT$6000,000 to 720,000(about US$22,222 to 26,666)/yr for Post-doctoral
Research Specialist, plus bonuses.
     Applicants should send a vitae, transcripts from graduate school,
an abstract of the dissertation (including the title, chapter by
chapter summary, methodology, materials, and main conclusions), and
three letters of recommendation to

     Vacancy for a PhD Researcher (from April 1 1997) on the project

	  MACHINE LEARNING AS A METHOD IN LANGUAGE ANALYSIS

A grant of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific research (NWO)
is available for this vacancy (about 27,500 Dutch guilders per year,
for four years). When succeeding in concluding the research with a PhD
within the alotted 4 years, a 2 year temporary postdoc position is
subsequently offered.

About the project:

      The availability of large language corpora combined with large
computing power has opened up exciting new possibilities for
computer-aided linguistic analysis.  In the ILK (Induction of Language
Knowledge) project of Tilburg University we investigate how inductive
learning algorithms, developed in machine learning (a sub-discipline
of artificial intelligence) and statistical pattern recognition can be
of use in linguistic analysis, language technology, and cognitive
modeling.  We are looking for someone with a background in
(Computational) Linguistics or Artificial Intelligence (Machine
Learning) who is willing to research applications of Machine Learning
in Linguistics and prepare a PhD on this topic.

About the group:

      At full strength (mid 1997), the ILK research group will consist
of the main researcher, an NWO postdoc, and four PhD researchers. Good
computing facilities (mainly Unix workstations) are available. Several
close research cooperations exist with other groups in The Netherlands
and in Europe.
