Call For Contributions
NIPS'97 Workshop
Neural Models of Concept Learning
---------------------------------
Neuronal models of lexical acquisition and semantic processing have been
adressed in the context of connectionist models of categorization,
including self-organizing maps, constraint satisfaction networks and
multilayer feedforward networks.
However, recently a number of suggestions and proposals have been forthcoming,
which put research on lexical meaning in context with concept learning,
language development and statistical induction.
These approaches relate to the disciplines of
cognitive psychology of concept learning
statistical lexical acquisition
emergentist approaches to language development
It seems that a theory of conceptual semantics is forthcoming which
pushes beyond the limits of connectionist models by incorporating
strands from dynamic system theory (attractor networks,
catastrophe theory) and statistical induction (Kolmogorov complexity,
MDL learning).
The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for an interchange of
methodologies, research directions and theoretical discussion.
The format will consist of introductory statements from panelists,
group discussion and individual position paper presentations.
Abstracts (500 - 1000 words) are solicited from all prospective
participants as a brief description of their ongoing work in
the context of this workshop. Please send your abstract by e-mail
to scheler at icsi.berkeley.edu or georg at ai.univie.ac.at by the end of
July.

Format:
We envisage about 20-30 participants with about 10 individual
paper presentations of 15-20 minutes and a number of panelists to
lead group discussion.

Electronic publication of submitted abstracts will be realized on the
workshop website (www.ai.univie.ac.at/~georg/nips-ws/abstracts).
A book publication by Springer or another major publisher in 1998
based on full papers from workshop participants and additional contributions
by other researchers is anticipated.

CALL FOR PAPERS
FOURTH MEETING
OF THE ADL
5-6 DECEMBER 1997
UNIVERSITY OF PARIS 7 - DENIS DIDEROT
The Atelier des Doctorants de Linguistique (ADL) is an organisation created
and run by students. With the support from the University of Paris 7, it
aims at developing exchanges between students from different theoretical
backgrounds. In that respect, the fourth meeting is an opportunity for
young linguists to present their works and exchange ideas around :
* papers in miscellaneous areas of linguistics
* workshops on interdisciplinary topics
* friendly breaks allotting time for discussions
This meeting is organised by students and is student-oriented.
Papers, preferably delivered in French, should deal with the following
fields: computational linguistics, history of linguistics, morphology,
phonetics, phonology, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, semantics,
sociolinguistics, syntax and word-formation. A three-page abstract should
be sent by October 15th, accounting for the theoretical backgrounds,
hypotheses, examples and results which are to be presented at the meeting.
Abstracts should be submitted, by email if possible, at
Leglise at linguist.jussieu.fr or sent by snail mail. In that case, send three
anonymous copies along with a separate listing of name, institutional
affiliation, preferred mailing address, phone, e-mail address and paper
title to the following address:
4emes rencontres de l'ADL
Universite Paris 7 - Denis Diderot
UFR de Linguistique - Case 7003
Tour Centrale, piece 911
2, place Jussieu
75251 Paris Cedex 05
Accepted papers will be notified by the program committee in early November.
The meeting will be free of charge. Furthermore, we will try to accommodate
speakers. For further information, join us at

informatique, morphologie, phonetique, phonologie, pragmatique
