(1) The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a
postdoctoral staff position in the field of language comprehension.
This is a non-permanent position, for which the maximum term of
appointment is 5 years.

Young scientists with a completed Ph.D. in experimental
psycholinguistics, another branch of human experimental psychology, or
a related experimental discipline, are encouraged to apply.  An
important criterion is a demonstrated ability to publish research
findings.  Ongoing research in the language comprehension group is
concentrated in the following areas: spoken-word recognition; sentence
and discourse integration; and the role of phonological structure in
comprehension. All these areas include cross-linguistic studies. The
successful candidate may be working in one of these areas, or in an
area which will allow fruitful interaction with the ongoing work.

(2) The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a
scholarship for research leading towards a PhD in the field of
spoken-language comprehension.

The successful candidate will develop a research project on a topic
related to spoken-word recognition and/or phonological structure in
comprehension.  Research with a cross-linguistic dimension would be
encouraged, as would research involving computational modelling.
Candidates with a background in experimental psycholinguistics may
receive preference.

Centre for Communication Interface Research
The University of Edinburgh
Dialogue Engineering Research

CCIR is a multi-disciplinary research centre which is addressing a wide
spectrum of human-computer interface issues ranging from the dialogue
engineering of spoken language systems for telephone applications to the
design and implementation of Internet-based virtual reality systems for
electronic commerce.

Our multi-disciplinary team of engineers, interface designers, linguists,
psychologists and social scientists work on projects funded by the EPSRC,
the European Commission, BT, BSkyB, Barclays Bank and the Royal Bank of
Scotland.

We are seeking enthusiastic graduates with good degrees in Linguistics,
Artificial Intelligence, Psychology or the Social Sciences and an interest
in the new communications media.  The successful applicants will be part of
a project to investigate dialogue engineering for automated telephone
services using natural language processing.  Further details of our

The posts will be for 1 year in the first instance with a salary in the
range #14,732 - #22,143.
