We anticipate the following fixed-term terminal Lecturer appointments
at 33.33% time for the 1997-98 fall semester (8/25/97-1/8/98) in the
following courses:

1.  English 329, Structure of English: introduction to the principal
syntactic structures of English, as well as to appropriate
argumentation for constituent analysis; students are beginning
M.A./upper-division undergrads, mainly interested in applied English
linguistics and TESOL.

2.  English 332, Studies in Interlanguage: introduction to
interlanguage analysis, contrastive/error analysis, language transfer,
and related issues; students are M.A./upper-division undergrads in
applied English linguistics and TESOL.

3.  English 324, Structure of English for Teachers: introduction to
principal strucural characteristics of English with special
consideration for language structures that high school teachers
typically deal with; experience in secondary school teaching will be
desirable; students are bright English-Education majors.

We are especially interested in a person with research/teaching
interests in syntactic theory and second language acquisition,
probably UG applications, to teach English 329 and English 332.
Ph.D., or ABD, required.

Although these positions have been approved for the fall semester
only, it is possible they will be approved for the spring semester as
well.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State
University, Los Angeles announces a one-year full-time temporary
position in Japanese to begin September 1997.  Requirements include:
Ph.D. or A.B.D. in Japanese or a closely-related field; native or
near-native proficiency in Japanese; evidence of excellence in
competency-based language instruction; and willingness and ability to
work in a multi-ethnic cultural environment.  Preference to candidates
with a record of successful teaching of civilization and
literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant
Professor, and may be renewed for a second year. This position is
contingent upon funding.  California State University, Los Angeles is
