SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
SPOKEN LANGUAGE TRANSLATION
Workshop in conjunction with ACL'97/EACL'97 in Madrid,
July 11, 1997,
organized by ELSNET
and the editors of Machine Translation.
A. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop will be dedicated to spoken language translation
(SLT), and its interrelationships with machine translation of
written language (MT). It will be a one-day workshop, with four
consecutive sessions, addressing the following four issues:
- current trends in SLT research (approaches, problems),
- current trends in SLT applications (products, niches),
- how/where can MT and SLT learn from each other,
- what can be done to improve convergence or synergy.
Sessions will start with 30 minute presentations, followed by a
moderated round-table discussion on the basis of the
presentations and the submitted contributions (which will have
been distributed before the workshop).
It is envisaged that the presentations and the discussions at the
workshop will lead to a number of articles to be published in a
special issue on spoken language translation of the journal
Machine Translation.
The workshop is supported by ELSNET within the framework of its
objective to encourage and stimulate the integration of language
and speech.

addressing one or more of the issues above. All papers will be
reviewed, and a subset will be selected for presentation. Papers
may be position papers, critical analyses, or describe
unpublished research.
The entire process from initial submission, to reviewing and
final submission will be handled electronically. The initial
submission may either be in
- plain ASCII,
- compressed PostScript,
- Microsoft Word,
- or LaTeX.
LaTeX submissions should follow the ACL submission style
(aclsub.sty, retrievable from the ACL LISTSERV server or the ACL
WWW pages), which requires TeX 3.14 or LaTeX 2.09. (La)TeX
submissions that include (possibly) separate postscript figure
files must be packaged using the aclpkg.script (also available
from the LISTSERV). ASCII or postscript is preferred, however.
Final accepted versions MUST be (la)tex files following
aclsub.sty, if necessary packaged using aclpkg.script. Postscript
figures following psfig.sty may be included. In exceptional
circumstances, Microsoft Word files will also be accepted,
provided they follow the same formatting guidelines.
Submissions should be sent via email to
steven.krauwer at let.ruu.nl. Acknowledgement of receipt will be
sent to the submitter of the paper.

have priority. The registration fee for the workshop has been
reduced from $ 50 to $ 30 for all participants. This includes
workshop proceedings, and lunch, coffee, tea and refreshments for
the participants.
