GOING ROMANCE 1997 WORKSHOP,
DECEMBER 13
ASPECTS OF COMPLEMENTIZERS IN ROMANCE
Invited Speaker MANUELA AMBAR
CALL FOR PAPERS
Though generative research has lead to considerable insights into the
nature of Comp, many aspects are still in need of further
investigation. This workshop intends to stimulate the discussion
around the typical facets of Romance complementizers. Relevant topics
that may play a role are, for instance, movement of verbs to C, split
complementizers, the relation between the complementizer and the
tense-mood-aspect system, infinitival particles, typological
differences between (distinct stages of) Romance languages and between
Romance and other languages, the relation between complementizers and
determiners, and Doubly Filled Comp Effects. Besides the paper of the
invited speaker, there will be room for three selected papers. The
presentation of the papers will take 30 minutes, and will be followed
by a 20-minute commentary and a 10-minute general discussion. Those
interested in submitting a paper are invited to send one camera-ready
abstract containing title, author's name and affiliation (maximal two
pages, letter size 11/12, 1-inch margins), plus 7 anonymous copies.
Submissions by e-mail or fax can be accepted, provided a camera-ready
original is received within one week after the deadline. Include a 3"
x 5" card with the title of the paper, author's name, affiliation,
address, telephone number, e-mail. Selected speakers will be required
to send in a version of their paper before November 21. Submissions
are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per
author, for the whole conference.

Subject: Call for papers: Linearity
Call for papers
Linear order
Recherches linguistiques de Vincennes (RLV) intends to publish an
issue (6 to 7 papers, to be published in 1999) on the topic of
linearity in grammar. This is a very broad question covering
constituent ordering in syntax, morpheme order, the status of
linearity in phonology. Any contribution related to linearity in any
component of the grammar of natural languages (including sign
languages) will be considered for publication. Interface or cross
component contributions are particularily welcome. It is actually hard
for any work in linguistics not to deal with linearity somehow. The
papers we are willing to publish should therefore deal primarily and
centrally with linearity and its status in grammar.
Papers should not exceed 30.000 signs (including spaces) and be
written in English or, preferably, in French.
In case you are interested, please send a detailed project or a paper
(one anonymous version, one with your name, address and affiliation)

Yuen Ren Society Annual Meeting, 1998
The Annual Conference of the The Yuen Ren Society will be held at the
University of Washington in Seattle on 7-8 February, 1998.
The loose theme this year is features defined comparatively across various
Chinese dialects. Abstracts will be accepted through the end of 1997, and
will be posted before the end of January, 1998.
The Yuen Ren Society for the Promotion of Chinese Dialect Fieldwork is
dedicated to the study of diverse varieties of spoken Hann Chinese, with
strong emphasis on descriptive fieldwork. It is the only academic
organization of its kind in the world. The Society was founded in 1990 at
the University of Washington and is named after Yuen Ren Chao, a pioneer in
descriptive Chinese linguistics. The Society's meetings are an occasional
forum for distributing and discussing fresh dialect data. YRS meetings are
typically small and rather cozy, and speakers are allowed at least 30
minutes per presentation. Our format is more flexible than most of other
regular Chinese linguistics conferences, and we have a much narrower focus -
we insist that all presentations be supported by abundant data. Each year a
number of our presentations are usually devoted to reports on dialects that
are poorly known.
