We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Birth of professional Community Interpreting
For the purpose of a research paper, I am trying to find out when
community interpreting became "professionalised" or
"institutionalised" in different countries. I know the Swedish and
Nordic scene, but am a little uncertain about other parts of the
world. By "professional" I I mean doing paid interpretation work for
organisations or institutions either free-lance or employed. I would
appreciate any data, preferrably with bibliographic (print or WWW)
references.
Thank you in advance,

I am looking for the written version of a paper by Ovid Tzeng, Ying
Chen Hsu, Daisy Hung and Alfonso Caramazza entitled "Repetition
Effects in the Processing of Chinese Logographs", which was presented
at NACCL 6 (Sixth North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics) at
USC in 1994. (It is not part of the published proceedings for that
conference.) This is possibly part of a Ph.D. dissertation.
If anyone has a copy of either this paper, or the dissertation which
it may be/is a part of, I would be very interested in borrowing it to
make a copy of (or else making some other arrangement to get a copy).

I am looking for information on grad programs in linguistic
anthropology. My background is in comparative literature and
anthropology. Any suggestions on programs or how to find them, people
to talk to, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
