VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
IN LINGUISTICS
POSITION:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa
Cruz, announces the opening of a one-year visiting position in
semantics or syntax for 1998 -99 (subject to administrative approval
of funding) . There is the possibility that the position could be
renewed for a second year.
Applicants should have a PhD degree in Linguistics and a research and
teaching specialization in semantics or syntax. The incumbent will be
expected to contrib ute breadth to our undergraduate curriculum and
may also contribute to the graduate curriculum. Applicants should
provide evidence of excellence in teaching.
The department has PhD and MA programs in theoretical linguistics
focused on syntax, semantics, and phonology and undergraduate majors
in Linguistics and Langua ge Studies. The teaching load for this
position will be four courses divided among three quarters on a (late)
September through June calendar. Further informa tion about the

RANK: Visiting Assistant Professor
SALARY: $41,200 - $45,900, commensurate with qualifications and experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Linguistics in hand by September,
1998. Research and teaching specialization in semantics or syntax.

Postdocs in Phonetics and Speech
The Training Program in Phonetics and Speech at UCLA, which is funded
by NIH, announces TWO postdoctoral traineeships. One traineeship must
be taken up no later than June 30, 1998, with a maximum term of three
years; the application deadline for this position is March 1, 1998.
The other traineeship will begin EITHER (subject to availability): by
June 30, 1998, with a maximum term of three years, OR any time between
July 1 1998 and June 30 1999, with a maximum term of two years. The
application deadline for this position has not yet been fixed, but
applications and expressions of interest are welcome. Trainees must
have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by the beginning of the
appointment, and must be US citizens or permanent residents.
The training program is designed for linguists and non-linguists, with
or without extensive background in phonetics, who want further
training in the areas of phonetics and speech. The primary duty of
trainees is to carry out research, though trainees may also audit
courses to further their training. Each trainee has one or more
faculty adviser who supervises the trainee's research. The following
participating faculty are currently available to sponsor postdocs: in
the Linguistics Department: Pat Keating, especially for research using
the Carstens Articulograph or on the perception of prosody (contact
keating at humnet.ucla.edu for more information); Ian Maddieson, for
projects using the Articulograph or on phonetic and phonological
universals (ian at humnet.ucla.edu); Sun-Ah Jun, for projects involving
prosody, especially a psychologist interested in acquisition or
sentence processing, or a neuropsychologist interested in the
loss/retention/re- acquisition of prosody (jun at humnet.ucla.edu); Bruce
Hayes/Donca Steriade, for research in phonetically- driven phonology,
especially the phonetic basis of constraints (bhayes at humnet.ucla.edu
or steriade at humnet.ucla.edu); Susie Curtiss, for research on
neurolinguistics and developmental language disorders
(scurtiss at ucla.edu); and in the UCLA Medical School Bureau of Glottal
Affairs: Jody Kreiman/Bruce Gerratt, for research on voice
(jkreiman at ucla.edu).

information for references, and one or two sample papers to Prof.
Patricia Keating, Linguistics, UCLA, Los Angeles CA, 90095-1543. In
your application letter, please say who you would want to work with
and describe the kinds of research projects you would want to be
involved in, in terms of your past experience and what you would hope
to learn at UCLA. Because this is a training program in phonetics and
speech, each trainee must have a phonetics or speech component in at
least one research project; therefore, if it is not obvious, please
clarify the speech/phonetics component of your proposed activities.
Applications will not be considered if the research plan is either
entirely outside the scope of the training program, or does not match
the interests of the particular faculty available.
The stipend scale is set by NIH and currently ranges from $20,292/year
for a new Ph.D., to $32,300/year for 7 or more years post-Ph.D.
Health insurance, an allowance for conference travel, and research
expenses are also provided. Trainees may also hold temporary teaching
positions, e.g. in the Linguistics Department.
Interviews will be available at the January 1998 LSA meeting in New
York.

Pedagogy, native or near-native fluency in Spanish, 3 yrs college teaching
