The Philosophy Department and the Language Technology Institute (LTI)
at Carnegie Mellon University solicit candidates for a regular
tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank. The area of
specialization is Linguistics/Philosophy of Language, with a preference
for candidates who have experience with formal semantics (for natural
languages). The job will begin in Fall 1998. The position is in the
Department of Philosophy with regular teaching duties in the Language
Technology Program and research opportunities in the LTI.
The Department has 19 faculty members with strongly cross-disciplinary
interests; some of the research foci are in logic (broadly conceived),
philosophy of science, and applied ethics. The Department offers Ph.D.,
M.S. and B.S. degrees in Logic, Computation and Methodology, as well as
M.A. and B.A. degrees in Philosophy. Currently, 16 graduate students are in
these programs, approximately half of them in the Ph.D. Program. The Ph.D.
program is co-sponsored by the Departments of Computer Science and
Mathematics. For more information about the Department, visit our web site
at
http://hss.cmu.edu/philosophy
The LTI supports the Language Technology Program in the School of
Computer Science. Information concerning the LTI and the Language
Technology Program can be found at
http://www.lti.cs.cmu.edu/
Applicants should be prepared to teach graduate courses in their
speciality areas as well as general linguistics courses at the
undergraduate level and philosophy of language.
Candidates should include with their application a statement of research
interests, a sample of written work, curriculum vitae, and evidence of
teaching performance. Candidates should ask at least three referees to send
confidential letters directly to the Department. Applicants who do not
already have the Ph.D. degree must offer evidence that the degree will be
granted by August 1998. Women and minority candidates are strongly
encouraged to apply.
Send applications by December 1, 1999 to:
