		    ON THE FORMAL WAY TO CHINESE LANGUAGES

			    December 12-14, 1997

			      Call for Papers

	  **Deadline for abstract submission: October 1, 1997**

On the Formal Way to Chinese Languages will be held on December 12-14,
1997 at University of California, Irvine. Papers on all areas of formal
linguistics on Chinese languages are invited.

All abstract submissions must be received by October 1, 1997. Abstracts
must be no more than one page, single spaced, with all margins at least
one inch wide, in 12-point type (examples may be in 10-point type), and
camera-ready, on A4 or 8.5" letter size paper. Mail five copies of the
abstract, one with author's name and affiliation, four without, along with
a separate index card with paper title, name of author(s), affiliation and
status (student/non-student), mailing and e-mail addresses, and telephone
and fax numbers. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual
and one joint abstract per author. We regret that we cannot accept
abstract submissions by e-mail or fax.

Presentations will be tentatively 20 minutes long, plus 10 minutes for
questions. The details are unsettled at this time, but based on the number
of submissions. Abstracts and presentations are in English. Notice of
acceptance or rejection will be sent by e-mail in early November, 1997.
Pre-registration materials and preliminary schedule will be available in
late November, 1997.

                   The Penn Linguistics Club Announces

           The Twenty-Second Annual Penn Linguistics Colloquium

               Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March 1998

      Invited Speaker: HOWARD LASNIK, University of Connecticut


We welcome papers on any topic in linguistics and related fields.
This year's Colloquium will feature a special session on interfaces between
syntax and other subfields of linguistics, including but not limited to
semantics, pragmatics, computational linguistics, phonology,
sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics.

Speakers will have twenty minutes for their presentation and five minutes
for discussion and questions.

Prospective speakers should submit three copies of their abstract no later
than Monday 15 December 1997 to:

Abstracts should be no longer than 2 pages in a 12-point font with 1-inch
margins and should be accompanied by an index card including your name,

subfield of Linguistics (or related discipline) that you find most
appropriate to your topic.  In particular, please indicate whether you
would like your paper to be considered for inclusion in the special session.
Submissions by e-mail to plc22 at babel.ling.upenn.edu are welcome.

Colloquium participants are invited to submit their paper to the Penn Review
of Linguistics, which will be published late in the Spring following the
Colloquium.
