   Position Announcement -- Assistant Professor (tenure-track)

     The Division of English as an International Language (DEIL)
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor (nine-month /
full time) with specialization in instructed second language
acquisition (SLA) related to English.  We seek to hire a faculty
member with a well-defined research program in SLA, a solid
background in both Applied English linguistics and communicative
language teaching, and a demonstrated committment to excellence
in teaching.  Classroom ESL/EFL teaching experience is required.
Experience in task-based language teaching is highly desirable.
Fluency in a language other than English and knowledge of comput-
er applications to teaching and/or research are also desirable.
Responsibilities include teaching and advising in the graduate
M.A. TESL program and undergraduate programs and other departmen-
tal service.  The successful candidate will also be expected to
contribute to an interdisciplinary graduate program in second
language acquisition.

     Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in SLA studies, (Applied)
Linguistics or a related field by the date of the appointment.
The salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and ex-
perience.  The starting date is August 21, 1999.

Chair, Department of Asian Languages and Literatures

The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites
applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the newly proposed
Department of Asian Languages and Literatures. The department will be the
home for the graduate and undergraduate programs in Asian Languages and
Literatures (including graduate and undergraduate courses in Chinese
Language, Literature and Linguistics, Japanese Language, Literature, and
Linguistics, and South Asian Languages and Cultures).  The new Department of
Asian Languages and Literatures will build upon current university strengths
in the study of China, India and Japan to create a high-quality program in
Asian languages and literatures that will achieve international prominence.
The appointment will begin no later than September 1, 1999.

Responsibilities of the Chair

The chair is expected to build a strong program in Asian languages and
literatures; to help build an intellectual community that supports the
development of students and faculty with interests in Asia; to work closely
with other programs and institutes at the University of Minnesota, such as
the China Center and the Institute for Global Studies; to build intellectual
and curricular connections to faculty and programs housed in other
departments; to enhance the capacity of the College of Liberal Arts to serve
the language needs of not only our own students, but also those in other
collegiate units with programmatic ties to Asia; to assist in the
recruitment of a diverse student body to the college and to the University
of Minnesota; and to enhance outreach to the Asian communities in the state
of Minnesota.

Because this is a new department, there will be a series of start-up
activities to be undertaken by the new chair in 1999-2000.  Those activities
include:
 Conduct searches for incremental faculty positions to begin in the fall of
2000.
 Review, with the college, requests from current CLA faculty to join the
department.
 In consultation with the College of Liberal Arts, draft guidelines and
other procedures needed for departmental governance.
 Establish an office staff and other departmental administrative structures.

Required Qualifications:

 Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in an Asian language or literature.
 Teaching and research expertise in an Asian language or literature.
 Leadership experience in an academic institution.
 Distinguished record of scholarship.
 Demonstrated success in creating collaborative relationships.



Terms of Appointment

This full-time position holds both an administrative and a faculty
appointment.  The 9-month faculty appointment will carry tenure at the level
of professor or associate professor, depending on qualifications and
experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policies. The
12-month administrative appointment will be at the level of Chair; the
initial term of appointment is for three years, with the possibility of
renewal for an additional term or terms.  The appointment will begin no
later than September 1, 1999.

Salary

Competitive.  A 9-month base salary is attached to the faculty position; a
12-month administrative augmentation is added.
