Full Time Tenure-Track Position in Child Development

The University
California State University, Hayward occupies 342 acres in the Hayward
hills, overlooking San Francisco Bay.  Cal State Hayward's central Bay
Area location provides easy access to museums, art galleries, aquariums,
planetariums, theaters, concerts, and sports events.  Its proximity to
both the Pacific Ocean and Sierra Nevada Mountains offers recreational
diversion as well as excellent laboratories for educational studies.  The
University has approximately 13,000 students with 600 faculty, and a
library that contains over one million items, accessible on-line.
Organized into four schools--Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences; Business
and Economics; Education and Allied Studies; and Science--the University
offers bachelor's degrees in 41 fields and master's degrees in 25, as well
as special majors.  Additional programs lead to teaching and other
credentials.  CSUH also operates a second campus in nearby Contra Costa
County, which provides full instructional support for over 2,500 upper

The Department of Human Development
Focusing on the development of human beings from birth through old age,
the interdisciplinary Department of Human Development prepares students to
work with people of all ages in a culturally diverse society.  Through
large lectures, small seminars, projects, and the Internet, students
develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication,
empathy, and team building. The Department has 6 full-time faculty,
including one joint appointment with Women's Studies, and approximately
400 majors.

Duties of the Position
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses
in child development, cognitive development, language acquisition, and the
child and the family and community. In addition, he/she will participate
in interdisciplinary team-teaching and engage in interdisciplinary dialog.
All faculty are expected to participate in committees involving campus
governance and to engage in student advising. The typical teaching load is
three 4-unit courses per quarter for three quarters.  Human Development
has several 3-unit courses that the successful applicant may teach.
Teaching assignments at California State University, Hayward include
courses at both the Hayward and Contra Costa campuses.

Rank and Salary
Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and
experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

Date of Appointment: September 1, 1999.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in any of the
disciplines that study childhood and the development of children. They
must have expertise in some aspect or area of child development (e.g.
social, cultural, cognitive, psychological, linguistic, ethnic minority
family structures, under-represented and ethnic minority children, etc).
In addition, candidates must be able to work in a team-teaching,
interdisciplinary environment, and to teach and advise adult students of
all ages from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Practical
experience in teaching, collaborative learning, distance learning, and
small group dynamics is highly desirable.

To be recommended for tenure the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory
performance in the areas of teaching; research, scholarship, and/or
creative activities; service to the university, the profession, and the
community.
