AB: This paper examines the Turkish origins of a number of Cypriot-Greek
words, explaining how some of these words have undergone a semantic
shift. Words of Turkish origin can be divided into three classes: (1)
culturally borrowed, those words that introduced a new concept into
Cypriot-Greek and have no purely Greek equivalent; (2) doublets, those
words that are used in Cypriot-Greek as synonyms for Greek words; and (3)
those words that have undergone a change in definition, usually narrowing the meaning of the original Turkish word or changing it altogether. The origin of the semantic shift of a number of words are explored.

AB: This report provides data on standard and non-standard African language
varieties occurring in urban areas of South Africa, drawn from nine smaller
reports. It illustrates the language use patterns in black urban communities and
describes the language varieties spoken in them. It was found that the impact of
non-standard varieties on the use of standard African languages is reflected
clearly in their grammatical systems. Main sources of influence are the European
languages of daily contact. Grammatical adaptation of the standard African
languages, in the form of lexical adoption from foreign languages, is a major
focus of the report. Implications of the study's results for African language
planning and for education are discussed. Chapters address these topics:
research origins, background, and methodology; theoretical bases in research on
sociolinguistics, multilingualism, language change, linguistic borrowing,
language variation, and language use within a speech community; language use
patterns in black urban communities, both general and specific; the nature of
phonological change; the nature of morphological change; syntactic change;
semantic shift; language interference in the schools; language planning in this
context; and implications for South African education policy and practice.

AB: The linguistic situation of Yoruba is described briefly and the origins of
Arabic influence on the language are examined. It is noted that Arabic
influences Yoruba mainly through Hausa, and four basic conditions results from
adaptation of Arabic phonemes in Yoruba: (1) the consonant, which does not exist
in Yoruba, is dropped without replacement; (2) consonants are replaced by the
nearest Yoruba phonemes; (3) there is the tendency to break consonant clusters,
which do not occur in Yoruba, and insert vowels, especially in certain phonetic
contexts; and (4) an Arabic consonant or diphthong is replaced by vowels.
Examples of each of these situations are offered. Following this, 35 of specific
phonetic patterns from Arabic, through Hausa, to Yoruba are detailed, with
examples. Contains 37 references and a list of Arabic loans in Yoruba. (MSE)

AB: Previous studies on use of library materials based on borrowing behavior
failed to address the issue of how the measurement of library book use might be
expanded to a broader definition of use, specifically to include browsing
behavior. The development of a non-obtrusive and accurate measurement for
browsing behavior has remained a challenge. Research involved an adaptation of a
counter-espionage technique, called a "tell-tale": small unobtrusive slips of
paper were placed in selected library volumes. Movement or loss of the tell-tale
indicated browsing within the volume. Sampling technique for the 133 volumes
chosen is outlined. Browsing data from tell-tale displacement is provided in
tables for both 6 week and 20 month time lapses. Results showed the "browsing
ratio" (number of volumes indicating browsing divided by total volumes accounted
for) appeared to be several times greater (six to seven times) than the
proportion checked out. While the ratio increased over time, there was no
observed steady rate of browsing as a function of time. Discussion of the
results includes the lack of evidence of "repeat browsing," failure to locate
items due to misshelving, and recommendations for increased accuracy of results.
However, this research demonstrated that evidence of browsing could be
objectively and unambiguously determined and measured. (MAS)

AB: This paper examines the Turkish origins of a number of Cypriot-Greek words,
explaining how some of these words have undergone a semantic shift. Words of
Turkish origin can be divided into three classes: (1) culturally borrowed, those
words that introduced a new concept into Cypriot-Greek and have no purely Greek
equivalent; (2) doublets, those words that are used in Cypriot-Greek as synonyms
for Greek words; and (3) those words that have undergone a change in definition,
usually narrowing the meaning of the original Turkish word or changing it
altogether. The origin of the semantic shift of a number of words are explored.

AB: This report describes the "Library Directory" computer program which is used
to help library patrons of California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) locate
information about specific subject collections and/or service areas through a
combination of graphics and text. The program is written on Hypercard 1.2.0.,
runs on a Macintosh computer with a 20mb hard disk, and does not require the use
of a keyboard. The Directory consists of six information units: (1) General
Information (including interlibrary loan, the media center, copying facilities,
the reserve room, archives, borrowing privileges, and library hours); (2)
Specific Subject (locating information in CSUS' subject divided library); (3)
How to Find Books (using the card catalog, reading Library of Congress--LC--
call numbers, locating materials by floors); (4) A Quick Tour of the Library
(contains floor maps of all five floors); (5) A Guide to Floor Locations (allows
a shortcut to the specific call number; and (6) Finding Journals and Newspapers
(explains periodical and newspaper organization, indexes, and abstracts). Sample
screens for each of the six sections are included, and permission is granted by
the author for full use and/or adaptation of the stacks provided that
recognition is properly and duly noted. (MAB)

AB: The typical pattern of Chinese word formation is to have native material
adapt to changed circumstances. The Chinese language neither borrows nor lends
words, but it does occasionally borrow concepts. The larger cultural pattern in
which this occurs is that the Chinese culture borrows, if necessary, but ensures
that the act of borrowing does not bring with it other aspects of the foreign
culture, not even the name of the borrowed concept. When the Chinese borrow a
Western concept, its foreign name must be stripped away, and it must be cleansed
of all possible foreign influence and made Chinese in both form and character.

AB: Indian languages seem to have emerged from a phase of total dependence on
English for new input. Several Indian languages have now evolved vocabularies
and structural nuances to handle several new registers and styles necessary for
modern society. Some of the change has occurred through conscious language
policy encouraging multilingualism and the standardization of multiple
languages. Adaptation, the naturalization of material within a language system
as contrasted with superficial borrowing or infusion, is also occurring in
several Indian languages. It has come about through urbanization,
industrialization, and education, in the forms of straight borrowing from
English, hybrids or loan blends, loan translations, adaptive coining,
paraphrasing, semantic reinterpretation of Sanskrit words, expanding the
semantic range of native words, and total assimilation of the nonnative concept.
It now seems possible that Indian languages will achieve total
intertranslatability with languages such as English, German, French, and
Russian. (MSE)

AB: Linguistic borrowing from English to Jordanian Arabic at the lexical level
is described, focusing on phonology and the extent to which Jordanian Arabic has
affected the phonetic structure of English loans assimilated partially or
completely into it. Conspicuous distinctive sound features in the two languages
that may affect non-native speakers' pronunciation of loan words are examined,
and common patterns of phonemic interference and substitution are analyzed.
Aspects of the phonology of the assimilation of loan words discussed include
devoicing, voicing, emphasis (or velarization), gemination, consonant cluster
simplification, flapping, and vowel lengthening. Three sociolinguistic trends in
English loan word assimilation are noted: (1) one group of speakers attributes
considerable prestige to lexical innovation and borrowing and strives to show
adequate knowledge and near-native English speech; (2) a second group, the
majority, uses loan words unknowingly and exerts a great influence on their
morphology, with a near-complete morpho-phonemic adaptation of some words; and
(3) classicists or purists tend to resist all traces of foreign linguistic
encroachment on Arabic and search for genuine Arabic terms or coinages for
foreign concepts. (MSE)

AB: A study of rural Quebec's language showed that by comparison with the urban
version, it is less influenced by anglicisms, and the borrowing that has
occurred is not solely of terms of civilization designating objects or notions
susceptible to exchange between anglophones and francophones in Quebec. Certain
anglicisms seem to have become integrated into rural Quebecois in diverse
domains, including forestry, business and commerce, and industry, and have
stayed outside the realm of family and farm life. In other cases it seems that
English words have been adopted to fill gaps in French vocabulary. The study's
report outlines the characteristics of both monomorphemic and polymorphemic
borrowings, including: (1) the mechanisms of interference, both the borrowing of
entire words and the borrowing of meaning only; (2) interlinguistic
coincidences; and (3) modes of adaptation of borrowings (phonetic, graphemic,
morphological, morphosyntactic, and semantic). The overall balance of lexical
interference and the prospects for persistence or disappearance are also
discussed. An appendix contains tables of the frequency and distribution of a
variety of borrowings, and a bibliography and an index of borrowed terms are
also included. (MSE)

AB: An adequate theory of phonology should be able to explain the process of
adaptation of foreign words into the native language, as well as to account for
their nativized phonological and phonetic representations. The paper
acknowledges the deficiencies of the "phonetic approximation" and the "phonemic
approximation" hypotheses in meeting this end, and discusses the shortcomings of
Hyman's (1970) generative phonology model. The model presented here is derived
from Stampe's (1968, 1969) natural phonology theory, and hypothesizes that
incoming foreign segments will be inserted into the lexicon without change
unless they are inadmissible underlying segments, in which case they will be
analyzed by the native rules until some admissible representation is obtained.
If a segment cannot be analyzed as an admissible form in the native system, it
will be represented in the lexicon as it is and eventually will be restructured
by the dominant native rules. Within this paradigm, certain English loans in
Japanese are examined, and at the same time properties of the system of Japanese
phonology which are revealed in the process of borrowing are discussed. Among
the areas discussed are: palatalization, vowel insertion, gemination of
consonants, and glides. (DB)

(MSE)
