Job Announcement--posts available September 1998
The department of English language and Literature at Kuwait University
invites applications for the following posts, available September
1998:
An associate and a full professor in linguistics (syntax, semantics,
pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational
linguistics).
An associate and a full professor in Translation (Arabic-English
Translation)
Qualifications & Duties:
Candidates must hold at least an associate post no less than three
years prior to appointment. Strong publication record and native
tongue are advantages. The successful candidate for faculty position
is expected to teach three courses per semester (9/h/w).
Benefits:
Competitive salary scales ($4300-$5000 per month for the associate
professor and $5000-$6300 per month for the professor). Kuwait is a
tax-free country, and salaries are paid at monthly intervals for 12
moths a year including paid summer vacation for three
moths/year. Kuwait University faculty are entitled to accommodation
allowance of $1800 per month for the associate professor and $2100 per
month for the professor. In addition, all Kuwait University faculty
and language instructors are entitled to:-
(a) FREE comprehensive health insurance for faculty, spouse and three children,
(b) FREE school tuition for up to three children,
(c) Annual return ticket for faculty, spouse and up to three
children.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP
LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND LINGUISTIC
MINORITY STUDENTS
The Graduate School of Education, University of California,
Berkeley, seeks a specialist in the education of language minority
students with broad knowledge of the area of educational linguistics
for an associate professorship with tenure, pending budgetary
approval, to begin in July 1998. The individual selected for this
position will be affiliated with an interdisciplinary group focused on
language and literacy development and education, and would help that
group expand its work on the education of linguistic minority
students. Since language figures prominently in most areas of
education, that individual should be prepared to work with students
and faculty in other areas of schooling as well; for example, on
issues related to the role of language in mathematics and science
education; to cognitive and social development in bilingual children;
and language policy or testing in education. In particular, the
position will deal with linguistics issues in the education of
diverse language minority students, and with the preparation of
teachers to work with such students in American schools.
Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in education,
linguistics, educational linguistics, applied linguistics, or a
closely related area, and should be able to demonstrate excellence in
research and teaching. Teaching and research experience in the
American public school system is highly desirable. Candidates should
be prepared to teach graduate level courses in research on language
teaching and learning, as well as teacher education courses with a
focus on bilingual issues and various school subjects (e.g., math,
science, reading and writing, social studies, etc.) to language
minority students (e.g., Latino, Asian, American Indian, etc.). In
addition, candidates should expect to play an active role in the
development of the School=B9s research and instructional programs, and
to collaborate with colleagues throughout the School in scholarly and
service activities.

Position Available: Lecturer (Renewable non-tenure track position)
Effective Date: August 24, 1998
Minimum Qualifications:
1) MA in Korean
2) Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English
3) College level language teaching experience
Responsibilities include:
1) Teaching elementary and intermediate Korean at University of
Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University
2) Possibility of teaching one course in linguistics or an appropriate
area of Korean Studies (for extra compensation) each semester.
Salary: $ 25,000 (9 months, non-negotiable)
Note:
1) Applicants on short list will be required to submit a videotape to
demonstrate Korean language teaching.
2) Employment is contigent upon proof of the legal right to work in
the United States. This proof must be provided prior to employment.
