PROFESSOR

Applicants are invited for the position of Professor of Japanese within the
Japan Centre of the Faculty of Asian Studies. The appointee is expected to
be an acknowledged leader in language teaching and research. While
preference will be given to expertise in linguistics, others are also
strongly encouraged to apply.

The ANU is the leading centre for Asian Studies in Australia, with the
Faculty cooperating with the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies to
offer a wide range of studies at both the undergraduate and the graduate level.

The ANU posses an internationally recognised program in Japanese Studies
which includes specialists in linguistics, economics, history, political
science, culture, literature and religion. Senior ANU staff include two
Professors of Japanese History, a Professor of Japanese Economics and a
Reader in Japanese Literature.

The Faculty has a large percentage of students enrolled in combined courses
such as Asian Studies/Commerce, Asian Studies/Economics, Asian
Studies/Engineering, Asian Studies /Law, Asian Studies /Science and Asian
Studies /Visual Arts. The Faculty also offers degrees in which the students
spend a Year-in-Asia. A high level of language competence is required of all
students and staff.

Selection Criteria

Experience and Skills

An acknowledged leader in Japanese language teaching and in research. While
preference will be given to expertise in linguistics, scholarly eminence in
other disciplines relevant to Japanese studies will be considered.

Exceptional leadership skills relating to the development of teaching,
research and outreach activities.

Proven ability to combine use of Asian-language materials and disciplinary
methodologies in research.

A high level of active competence in the Japanese language. The level of
competence is defined as the ability to conduct research, and to lecture to
advanced students, in that language.

A demonstrated high standard in teaching, including Japanese language
teaching, and commitment to maintaining and developing such a standard in
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

A demonstrated competence and willingness to run a Department or Faculty,
and to serve in the higher levels of university administration.

Ability and willingness to perform important administrative duties in the
Faculty.

Understanding of, and commitment to, equal opportunity principles in a
University Environment.

A higher degree in a relevant field.

Personal Qualities

Willingness and ability to give creative leadership and to foster excellence
in academic research, teaching, professional activities and policy
development in the area of Japanese Studies within the Centre, Faculty,
University and community.

Commitment to continue academic work of high quality.

A commitment to the academic welfare of students

Ability to cooperate and maintain effective relations with colleagues and
staff at all levels within the Centre, Faculty and University.
