Post-doctoral Research Associate

                     Natural Language Understanding

CIRCLE (Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Constructive Learning
Environments) has an opening for a post-doctoral research position in
the area of natural language understanding (NLU) for intelligent
tutoring systems.  One of the goals of CIRCLE is to build and test a
new generation of intelligent tutors that promote knowledge
construction by the student.  Natural language interaction will be
used to enhance the flexibility and effectiveness of the tutoring
system.  The successful candidate for this job will have primary
responsibility for the design and implementation of a natural language
understanding component.  The design of the envisioned NLU module will
involve deciding what existing technology can be used (e.g., for
robust parsing), extending and modifying components as necessary, and
constructing appropriate linguistic knowledge sources such as
grammars, lexicons, and ontologies.  The NLU design must also support
interaction with other modules such as a tutorial planner.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Ph. D. in Artificial Intelligence or
Computational Linguistics, or a related field.  Experience with
tutoring systems would be a plus, as would empirical studies of human
tutors.  Candidates must have good system design and implementation
skills demonstrated by prior experience.

The fellowship is for a minimum of 2 years, with extension to up to 5
years.  It is a full-time position, but not tenure-track, with full
benefits.  Teaching opportunities are available but not required.

tenured position of Lecturer in Japanese, (US equivalent Assistant
Professor) in the Department of Asian Languages, from persons with a
higher degree in an area of Japanese studies.  Preference will be
given to applicants who possess, or who are close to completing, a
