RESEARCH ASSISTANT (ENGLISH LINGUIST OR COMPUTER LINGUIST):
LEARNING BEHAVIOUR IN THE INTERNET GRAMMAR
The Chair of English Language and Linguistics seeks to appoint as soon
as possible, initially for 2 years, a full-time Research Assistant
(English Linguist or Computer Linguist) to work on the project
"Learning Behaviour in the Internet Grammar". The post is funded by
the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Association).
The duties of the postholder will include:
- evaluation and production of grammar materials
- development of material on selected (contrastive) aspects
- participation in the testing and evaluation of a prototype
internet grammar
- participation in the implementation of the final version of
the internet grammar (esp. tense and aspect and prepositional
usage).
Salary will be in the region of 13,000 GBP per annum (for a single
person at age 23) rising to ca. 15,000 GBP at age 31 (German BAT
IIa-Ost salary scale). There is the possibility of a place in a
university residence.
Candidates appointed without a Ph.D. will have the opportunity to
register for a Ph.D. degree, without fees, in a topic related to the
project.

The person appointed will have:
- a postgraduate master's degree or Ph.D. in English linguistics, ELT,
or a related field
- interest and ability in descriptive grammatical analysis of English
- native-speaker competence in English
- computer literacy, ideally including experience with corpora and/or
the World-Wide Web
- ability to work in a close-knit team and in collaboration with partner
groups in the UK and elsewhere.
Some knowledge of German is essential.

Position Summary: Teach four courses in the 1998-1999 academic
year. Courses include a General Education course on language and
social issues (once in the fall semester, once in the spring
semester), a graduate-level introduction to linguistics designed for
