Subject: Computational Linguists (French & Spanish)

Our client is looking for a Spanish Computational Linguist and a
French Computational Linguist for one-year contract positions.
Persons interested in these positions may send their resumes to Parker
Professional Search via email to resourcemgt at msn.com. Or resumes may
be sent by fax to Parker Professional Search-Linguist at 206-223-8227
(United States phone number). A description of the positions is
listed below.

COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTS for French and Spanish lexicography

A large U.S.-based software company is looking for computational
lexicographers for French and Spanish. These 1-year contract
positions will be located in Redmond, Washington, USA. This is a
great opportunity to work with a dedicated group of researchers who
are creating broad-based Spanish and French parsers, and an
experienced product team who will ship grammar checking products based
on the core parsing technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The lexicographer's primary responsibilities include maintaining the
dictionary used by the parser and grammar checker, working with one
full-time lexicographer already on staff (for each language).

QUALIFICATIONS:

The lexicographer's qualifications should include experience in
linguistic research and online dictionary development, keen interest
in lexical issues, and an advanced degree in linguistics or a closely
related discipline. Fluency in the language is assumed. A practical
orientation is highly desirable. Significant programming experience
or experience extracting lexical information from online dictionaries
or corpora would be a plus.

ABOUT THE GROUP:

We are in the process of designing and building a system to analyze
unrestricted natural language, taking input text, and moving from
lexical/morphological analysis through syntax, semantics, and
eventually pragmatics and discourse. A generation component is also
planned. We focus our efforts both on core computational linguistic
research, and on shipping products that provide real benefit to the
computer user.

POSITION AVAILABLE:   RESEARCH ASSISTANT

We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant for the Brain and
Language Lab at the Georgetown Institute of Cognitive and
Computational Sciences (GICCS) at Georgetown University Medical
School. GICCS is a new insititute dedicated to understanding the
relation between brain and cognition. It is composed of a group of
about twenty researchers pursuing a variety of lines of research in
cognition, computation, and neuroscience.

At the Brain and Language Lab we are interested in the relation
between languageand the brain. We are currently focusing on the
neural bases of words and grammar. We are also examining sex
differences in language, the role of the cerebellum in cognition, and
the neural basis of dyslexia.

The Research Assistant may be involved in a number of projects
probing English, Italian, and other languages:

(1) psycholinguistic studies of normal adults;

(2) investigations of children and adults with developmental language
disorders (Specific Language Impairment and Williams syndrome);

(3) studies of patients with adult-onset brain damage (aphasics and
patients with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or Huntington's disease);

(4) electrophysiological experiments, using Event Related Potentials;

(5) functional brain imaging (fMRI) investigations of normal adults.
The successful candidate will help to design experiments, set them up,
test subjects, analyze data, and prepare presentations and papers.
Various other research and administrative tasks will also be expected,
including supervising student assistants and preparing grants.

Minimum requirements for the position include a B.A. or B.S. and
course background and/or research experience in language, cognition,
neuroscience, or a related field. Competence with Macintosh, PCs, or
UNIX is highly desirable, as is some background in statistics. A car
is required because subject testing is conducted at multiple sites.

The candidate should be available to work for two years, and perhaps
longer. The starting date is flexible, but must be some time between
late spring and early fall, 1998.

Salary will be extremely competitive.

Interested candidates should email Michael Ullman.

To apply, they should send him a resume and arrange to have at least
two letters of recommendation sent to him by email or regular mail.
(Alternatively, they may indicate the names and telephone numbers of
two or more references). Georgetown University is an Affirmative
Action/Equal Opportunity employer.
