We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Dear Colleagues,
The LINGUIST list is considering allowing use of its facilities for the
storing of Electronic Corpora, dictionaries and grammars. If you are
the owner or producer of such a tool or document, would you please
consider responding to our questions? It would help us greatly in
determining how to distribute our facilities.
1) What type of Language resource do you have? (eg. corpora, dict etc)
2) What language(s) is this for? Is this language an endangered or
minority language?
3) Is your resource currently available to the public in any form
(on the web, in print, via ftp etc)?
4) What format is it in (eg. Shoebox, Filemaker, your own database,
a word processing file, html etc)?
5) Have you tried to have this resource published through
a traditional print publisher? Was it successful?
6) Would you, in principle, be willing to put your resource on
the Linguist web site, making it available to researchers,
students and laypeople?
7) Were the linguist to develop a set of markup (or gloss standards)
to allow our search engines to search your data, would
you be willing to convert your data to those (liberal)
standards?
8) Does your data involve the use of any special fonts (IPA,
or language-specific fonts)
Best,
Andrew Carnie, Helen Dry, Anthony Aristar

Dear Collegues,
The LINGUIST list is considering making its facilities available to
other language & linguistics email lists. We would provide computer
space & moderator's accounts, archive and search facilities (similar
to the ones currently found on the Linguist list web page) and
our native software (written by John Remmers) we use to moderate
and generate list issues. The responsability and control of the list
would remain with the original list owners.
Before we do this however, we would like to gather some data from
people who currently run language & linguistics lists. Please feel
free to reply to this message with some or all of the following information.
1) Please tell us the name of the list you run & the approximate
number of issues you post per week/month
2) Is your list moderated?
3) Is your list run on listserv or major-domo software
4) Would you be interested in taking advantage of Linguist's
facilities?
Many thanks,
Andrew Carnie, Helen Dry, Anthony Aristar
(Moderators of the Linguist List)
