Subject:  Assistant Professor of Linguistics: Grammar, History, and Intro.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of English seeks
applications for an Assistant Professor in linguistics to teach courses
in the history of the English language, English grammar, and
introductory linguistics.  A second teaching field is desirable.  This
tenure-track position begins in the fall of 1999.  Candidate must have
Ph.D. by August 1999.  Will interview at MLA.  Send letter of

Position Announcement

Instructor / Child Language

The Linguistics Program at the University of Southern Maine has an opening
for Spring 1999 for a part-time Instructor to teach two sections of an
undergraduate course titled "Child Language". We are looking for a
candidate with excellent teaching skills and a broad command of linguistics
and the field of first language acquisition.  ABD PhD candidates are
especially encouraged to apply.  For Spring 1999 (1/11 - 5/1), both
sections will meet on Monday, one from 4 to 6:30 and another from 7 to
9:30.  In future semesters the schedule could be adjusted to accommodate
the Instructor.  Salary will be in the range $1,854 - $2,445 per course,
depending upon experience.  Travel time from Boston to Portland is about 2
hours.

The Linguistics Department at the University of Oregon has a
tenure-track opening for an Assistant Professor of Linguistics with
specialization in Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics,
beginning Fall 1999.  Salary is competitive depending on qualifications
and experience.  The successful candidate must hold a doctorate at time
of appointment; have excellent qualifications for undergraduate and
graduate teaching and for directing graduate research; and demonstrate
an excellent research and publication program in empirical, functional,
and cognitive approaches to second language acquisition and in at least
one of the following specializations: language teaching, language
planning, minority language development and maintenance.  Experience
working with K-12 second-language teachers and with intensive-
English-language programs is desirable.

The Linguistics Department of the University of Oregon has a

linguistics, the study of minority languages, and language acquisition,
