Postdoctoral staff position in language acquisition

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a
postdoctoral staff position in its Language Acquisition group. This is
a nonpermanent position for which the maximum term of appointment is 5
years.  The position is available from January 1999.  Although the exact
starting time is negotiable, we would hope to appoint a candidate as
early as possible.

Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in linguistics, psychology, or
a related discipline (or expect to finish within the next month or so),
and have a specialization in an area of language acquisition.  The
position is for a researcher who would work within the Argument
Structure Project of the Institute. This project is interdisciplinary
in nature, and candidates should have an interest in the language
acquisition of event structure, including, for example, event
segmentation, temporality, and/or predicate semantics.  Preference will
be given to candidates with a crosslinguistic, comparative approach,
especially those working with children learning a non-Indo-European
language.

The Faculty of Letters invites applications for a full professorship of
Comparative Indo-European linguistics
(Nr 8-335)

Job description:
-the teaching of comparative Indo-European linguistics
-to conduct, initiate, stimulate and supervise research in the field of
comparative Indo-European linguistics
-to fulfil managerial tasks inside and outside the department

The applicant has outstanding qualifications and ample experience in
teaching and research. S/he has his/her doctorate on a topic in
comparative Indo-European linguistics. In addition, s/he has research
experience in the field, the results of which are accessible in
international publications. The applicant is expected to have a sound
knowledge of the comparative method and of the historical grammar of the
major Indo-European languages, and to be familiar with the most recent
developments in comparative studies of lesser known Indo-European
languages. S/he will direct the Indo-European teaching programme and
will collaborate intensively with other colleagues of the Department of
Comparative Linguistics who are engaged in the study of
non-Indo-European language families, as well as with foreign colleagues
in the field of comparative linguistics. S/he must have demonstrated the
ability to stimulate and effectively supervise students.

If the candidate is not a native speaker of Dutch, s/he will acquire a
sound command of the Dutch language within two years.

managerial aspects of the appointment as part of the application
procedure.
