FACULTY POSITION
IN
PHONETICS OR PHONOLOGY
The Linguistics Department at the University of California, Santa
Barbara, seeks a linguist for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track
position in phonetics or phonology, to take effect July 1, 1999. Ability
to teach courses in both fields is preferred. Active research on a
variety of languages, and in one or more of the following areas, will be
considered a plus: competing theories in phonology or phonetics;
phonetics-phonology interactions; natural discourse prosody;
instrumental phonetic analysis; cross-linguistic, typological,
developmental, or historical-comparative studies of
phonological-phonetic systems. Ph.D. required at time of appointment.
Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and
representative publications. Candidates should arrange to have three
letters of recommendation sent by application date. Preliminary
interviews will be held in January, 1999 at the LSA meeting in Los
Angeles. For full consideration, applications must be received by
December 11.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University
at Albany-SUNY, comprising Hispanic and Italian, French, and Slavic and
Eurasian Studies, seeks faculty capable of contributing to an
interdisciplinary program encouraging innovative approaches to teaching
and research in the fields represented. Colleagues will participate, in
conjunction with other programs across the university, in a process of
debate and building in the humanities and social sciences that involves
critical and theoretical responses to the challenges of the contemporary
academy.
Fall 1999, pending administrative approval, one or two tenure-track
positions, Assistant or Associate Professor, in the following fields:
Contemporary Latin American literature. Specialization open. Ability
to teach poetry and/or drama and interest in cultural studies desired;
19th and 20th century Peninsular literature. Specialization open.
Interest in film studies desired;
Spanish linguistics. Specialization open. Interest in phonology and
ability to teach Portuguese desired.
We offer the Ph.D. in both Spanish literature and linguistics. Ideal
candidates will have an established research profile, teaching
experience at graduate and undergraduate levels, native or near-native
command of Spanish, Ph.D. in hand upon appointment. Applications from
